Gillian Anderson Looks Back at Her Most Viral Red Carpet Looks — from a Peekaboo Thong to the Vagina Dress

If there’s one thing Gillian Anderson will be, it’s an icon.

The Sexual education star caused a complete stir on the 2024 Golden Globe Awards red carpet when she appeared in a custom strapless Gabriela Hearst gown covered in embroidered vaginas. That dress wasn’t the first time she made a statement on the red carpet, though.

In an Instagram video posted on Monday, the actress (while styling her blonde hair) shared a video of several other key viral moments from her red carpet resume. To the tune of Kim Kardashian saying, “Because it’s cool, and I like to do cool s—,” Anderson shows off a Gabrielle Hearst dress, plus her plunging Valentino dress from the British Fashion Awards earlier this year and her ultra-cool peekaboo tango dress from the Vanity Fair 2001 Oscars Afterparty.

At the party in 2001, Anderson arrived in an Eduardo Lucero dress that, although beautiful from the front, with a cinched waist, really should have been visible from the back. The actress let her thong do the talking, peeking through the open back of the floor-length dress. She matched the glasses with the shade of the dress, and as an accessory she carried a bag with floral motifs.

Over the years, she has continued to attract attention on red carpets, always ready to wear something daring and beautiful.

Gillian Anderson gave up ‘uncomfortable’ bras: ‘I don’t care if my breasts reach my navel’

For the British Fashion Awards this year, she stepped out in a red velvet Valentino dress that goes down to her navel in the front and all the way down the back. It also came down on the sides, showing a lot of skin throughout and increasing the sexiness of the whole look.

She showed off her getting ready process on Instagram, which also gave a full look at the beautiful garment.

Anderson’s latest viral moment came at the Golden Globe Awards, when she wore her eye-catching dress.

She told Deadline on the red carpet that she chose the dress for “so many reasons.”

“My dress was designed by Gabriella Hearst, and it has vaginas on it,” Anderson, who played a sex therapist in her hit Netflix series, told reporters on the carpet as she showed off the dress. She then called the dress “appropriate for the brand.”

Inside, she told PEOPLE — after being hugged by Jennifer Garner — that the dress was floral-inspired, noting that she loved the fact that it was “covered in peonies!”

According to the label, each motif on the dress took 3.5 hours to embroider.

The actress very openly encouraged women to talk about their sexuality.

Last year, she revealed in an Instagram video that she was working on a book about women and sex — and even asked her followers on social media to share their sexual fantasies with her.
