“Vaginal print dress” wasn’t on our 2024 Golden Globes red carpet bingo card, but we love a good fashion risk — and Gillian Anderson did.
The Sexual education star, 55, made a big style statement at Hollywood’s big night, stepping out in a custom ivory strapless gown by Gabriela Hearst that she explained was embellished with vaginas.
“[I wore it] for many reasons,” said the actress Deadline female anatomy design, adding, “It’s right for the brand.”
Inside the ceremony, Anderson told PEOPLE — after being hugged by Jennifer Garner — that the dress also had floral inspiration, joking that what she loved most about it was that it was “covered in peonies!”
Anderson was very involved in the design of the dress, working closely with Hearst to bring the vision to life. The brand revealed that it took 3.5 hours to hand-embroider each “motif” on the custom-made dress.

In the carousel caption, she even gave a nod to her viral dress, joking, “Sometimes you just need a sausage with your yoni dress.”

Anderson was very open about encouraging women to talk about their sexuality.
Last year, she revealed in an Instagram video that she was working on a book about women and sex — and even asked her followers on social media to share their sexual fantasies with her.

The The X-Files Star said the goal of the book is focused on “exploring how women think about sex because sex is about femininity, motherhood, infidelity and exploitation, consent and respect, fairness and egalitarianism, love and hate, pleasure and pain.”
“As women, we know that sex is more than just sex,” she added. “But many of us don’t talk about it.”
She concluded that she ultimately hopes that women will feel safe in disclosing because the culture often suppresses it. “Our deepest most intimate fears and fantasies stay locked inside us until someone comes along with the key. Well, here’s your key,” she said.
