Rodriguez played Nell Serano — an obituary writer who starts seeing ghosts — on the ABC series, which was canceled after two seasons earlier this year. She tells PEOPLE while talking about her game, Good luck on the 13thyes it is He’s not dead yet the story is “not over” as she reveals the relationships she hoped to see blossom in the coming seasons.

“I would love a love triangle between me, Rick Glassman and Lauren’s character,” says Rodriguez, 40, referring to Glassman’s Edward and Lauren Ash’s character Lexi. “I definitely think the Edward-Nell story is not over. It’s a love story that really belongs.”

Rodriguez says she would also like “more exploration of my character’s experience with this crossover or who she can talk to. That last episode gives you this [idea] that in some way he can see people in intermediate stages [of life and death] as.”

“And so there could have been more research into what she actually does, and knows, and maybe [she] he’s getting better at it, maybe [she] he starts telling people he loves,” she continues. “Maybe it starts to get weird and create friendship conflicts.”

While there are plenty of things she’d like to see wrapped up in Nell’s story, Rodriguez’s overall take on the show’s cancellation is optimistic.

“This is what I say about things like this, is that I’m so happy that it makes me sad and heartbroken that we couldn’t do more together because I had such a great time. It’s a wonderful feeling,” she shares. “I’m so happy that I got another experience where I started a family so quickly.”

She has developed particularly close bonds with Simone, 44, and Ash, 41, whom she calls “my girlfriends for life”.

“Hannah helped me in motherhood, helped me in pregnancy. All women helped me in pregnancy. And Hannah [has] it really guided me as a mother,” she says, referring to one-year-old son Charlie, her husband, and husband Joe LoCicero.

Glassman, 40, was another strong connection she made, saying, “Me and Rick really hit it off. We just hit it off.”

Ahead of the show’s premiere last year, Rodriguez spoke to PEOPLE about how she connected with Nell’s story because she had just lost her grandmother.

“She lived a long, beautiful life. And she’s always with me. But how I learned so much from her and how I’m still learning from her now that she’s gone, or at least not here in the flesh,” she said. “And just the idea that those who have passed, those who are done with this physical existence can come back and teach you how to live better because you’re in it now. I just thought it was such a beautiful concept.”
