Gopi Bhalla started his career as a theater artist, usually playing the role of Ravana in local ramleela. In the early 1990s, he moved to Mumbai from Punjab in search of work in the film and television industry. Initially, he stayed with an old friend from Nabha, Darshan Singh, who worked as a bank clerk in Bombay.

Facts/Trivia
- According to Gopi, he is afraid of dogs. One day, his colleagues and dog trainer played a prank on him on the sets of the FIR, scaring Gopi and laughing about the entire incident. Speaking about the prank in an interview, he said:
Usually I’m the liar on set. But, this time Kavita got the better of me. I’m afraid of dogs and when the dogs started sniffing around me, I froze with fear. I couldn’t run away because I knew the dog would chase me. I avoided going anywhere near the dog until the entire shoot involving the dog was complete. “
- Gopi gained huge popularity with the role of Gopinath Gandotra and became one of the very few characters in the show who remained unchanged till the show ended in 2015. In an interview, while talking about his role as Gopinath Gandotra, he said:
I’m now the oldest character on the show and I’m proud of it. It has been a long time since I replaced Gopinath. However, I’m not tired of it. It comes in a variety of shades and I find a unique style that has become popular. I love when people imitate the way my character talks, uses the word “is” generously, or the way he walks. Very fulfilling. “
- According to Gopi, he perfected his comic timing under the tutelage of the late Kader Khan. In an interview, while talking about his experience as a Punjabi actor, he said:
I have done about 14 to 15 films in Punjabi. Most of the time I shared the screen with the late Kader Khan. I must say what a great actor he is and the writing is brilliant too. Also, I would like to add that comedic timing is something I learned from him. I really enjoy working and sharing stuff with him. “
