As Great British Bake Off winner, Syabira knows how important it is to keep cool in the tent. Whether it’s a dough that shrinks, a wet bottom or an uneven cake, the trick is to keep calm and keep going – a skill that new baker Dan already possesses.

“Based on the first episode – I’ve got a list here – my money will be on Dan,” explains Syabira.

“He’s a dad, very cool, he brews his own beer. But what I would say about him is that he’s pretty relaxed and has something in him that says, ‘I’m comfortable working in this situation.’ So as part of his technical challenges, he just says, ‘Yeah, I’ll just wait here a little bit.’ So I don’t know why, but my money’s on him.”

Syabira adds: “We have another contestant who is really good, we have Cristy. Cristy made the last duck at the end. I like her character, I like her persona and based on her Instagram alone, she actually does a lot of different cakes.”

“I’m also partial to Josh because he’s a researcher,” says Syabira HELLO!. “Explorers always do well in this baking competition. Again, I’m biased, I admit. But I didn’t see much of Josh in the first episode, so I hope to see more of him in the next episode because I can only guess or see based on who won airtime. So, yeah, I’m actually looking forward to seeing what they come up with next in the tent.”

Thinking about myself Bake Off trips, Syabira has nothing but fond memories, especially when it comes to judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.

“A very nice memory of the judges is when they taste your cakes. No matter how good or how bad your baking is, they always smile and would never spit food in front of you. It’s very friendly, and makes you feel very warm and welcome to the tent.

“There are a lot of sweet memories, especially when I got [Hollywood] shaking hands, and then Pru came up to me and said, ‘You’re a smart bunny,’ a bit like they really love us.”

Syabira’s time on Great British Bake Off he gave her more than memories. She also gained an incredible amount of confidence, which helped her to take on new challenges. “I think it really teaches you how to be confident and be in your own skin because otherwise it’s hard to create something very meaningful for you at every challenge,” she reflects.

“Every development of the recipe they would give you, they would say: ‘Why does that pastry mean something to you? What makes it special to you?’ So you really have to dig within yourself to create something that is you and represents you. Basically, [it’s like] you reveal your inner self through Bake Off – just be confident and believe in yourself.”

As for her next projects, Syabira has some exciting plans in the works. After launching her wildly popular Malaysian afternoon tea experience with CloudM Hotel in London, The GBBO alum is working on another event, scheduled for November. She’s also teased that “books are coming,” but in the meantime, fans will have to follow her Instagram account for updates. We can’t wait to see what Syabira does next!
