A mother of four children talks about the reality of gender disappointment.

In a video shared on TikTok, Kendra Evens showed her emotional reaction after discovering she was expecting her fourth daughter. Evens, who is already a mom to three other girls, watched the smoke from the Jack-O-Lantern turn pink, which made her cry.

“Are we going to get a girl?” one of her daughters yells as Evens hunches over in tears. “What? Why do we have to take the girl?”

Someone off-camera yells, “Girl gang all day,” to which Evens continues to cry as her husband rubs her back.

“When I got pregnant with my fourth child, I knew it was my last and after already having three amazing daughters, it was only natural that I wanted a boy, of course,” she tells PEOPLE. “On top of that, all three of my pregnancies with my daughters were exactly the same, but with this last pregnancy everything was so different that I swore in my head it was a boy.”

“When we found out the gender, I was hesitant about what to do because I didn’t want to disappoint people in front of them if it wasn’t a boy, but then they reminded me that it was my last pregnancy and I didn’t want to regret it,” continues the mother of four.

Evans says she was overcome with emotion when she saw a hint of pink coming from the Jack-O-Lantern. “All my emotions hit me immediately, I couldn’t help but cry. I couldn’t control my emotions at that moment, especially since I was pregnant.”

“And all these thoughts came to mind, thoughts that I will never have a son, that I will never be able to experience what it’s like to have a relationship between a mother and a son, to have a ‘mama’s little boy’ or something like that.”

She also says that her oldest daughter, the one shouting on the video, always wanted to have a brother, which is why she was so upset. “My oldest daughter in the video clearly didn’t hide her initial disappointment, ever since her first sibling she always wanted a brother.”

“Sexual disappointment is real, for both mom and/or dad,” Evens tells PEOPLE. “Our feelings are valid as humans and gender disappointment should be more normalized. You don’t know anyone’s situation or feelings, and just because someone is initially disappointed doesn’t mean the baby isn’t loved.”

Now Evens is the proud mom of four girls, including her youngest daughter, Nellie, and runs a coffee truck with her own sister.

“Having daughters has been amazing and has changed so much in my life already. My girls are so lucky to have each other and know what it’s like to have a sisterly bond — not everyone gets to experience that.”
