Gregg Wallace’s MasterChef co-star John Torode was ‘never friends with him’ and shows were fraught with tension

GREGG Wallace and MasterChef co-star John Torode have never been friends despite their 19-year on-screen relationship.

The long-standing colleagues are synonymous with the BBC cookery show and have proved to be one of TV’s longest-running doubles as they judge all manner of dishes – good and bad.

But behind the scenes, the couple is far from friendly.

Torode once bluntly told the Mirror: “It’s funny, we were never friends.

“We haven’t been to each other’s… If we go somewhere like South Africa, we do things separately…

“If we do go out for a drink, I’ll always be at one end of the big old table and he’ll be at the other.”

In another interview with the Radio Times, he brought up the fact that we “live separate lives”.

He even said there was “a little friction” between them.

The couple got together in 2005 when MasterChef was revived after a four-year hiatus.

Lloyd Grossman hosted the show since its inception in 1990, but left in 2000 and was replaced by chef Gary Rhodes in 2021, but fans did not connect with the new format.

Gregg was more emotional about his TV partner during an appearance on ITV’s Lorraine.

He said: “I shoot with John for six or seven months of the year, so we’re very close to each other physically and we’re very close to each other emotionally.

“What’s great about the partnership is that if one of you is a bit withdrawn, a bit off, the other naturally steps up, so I lean on John a lot.”

Gregg was forced to quit his MasterChef job yesterday amid a BBC misconduct investigation.

TV chef Gregg, 60, is alleged to have made sexual comments to 13 colleagues, including Beeb presenter Kirsty Wark.

The Sun revealed he had previously come under fire after “inappropriate sexual comments” were made to fellow Impossible Celebrities contributors.

Since then, 13 people who worked with Gregg on a series of shows over a 17-year period have now accused him of making sexual comments, the BBC has confirmed.
