Schools in Gujarat are closed today

Gujarat Schools Closed: Gujarat Government has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges today: 18 September 2023 District administration has announced closure of educational institutions and ITIs in Narmada district. Authorities have ordered the shutdown as many villages in the district are facing floods following the release of water from the Narmada dam.

IMD tweeted (X), “Red Alert issued! #Gujarat region expected to witness heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, over 204.4 mm, on 17-18 September. Be prepared & stay safe!.. . #Gujarat region is under orange alert for heavy rainfall, with possibility of extremely heavy showers (more than 204.4mm) on 19th September….”

Apart from the Narmada, rain-fed rivers including the Heran, Mahi, Meshra, Orsang and Panam swelled due to heavy rainfall which was augmented by the release of water from the dam. As a result, lowland villages were submerged in the flood.

Schools closed in Gujarat: NDRF and local rescue teams save lives

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local rescue teams are rescuing people stuck in flooded areas, including around 70 students of a residential school in Narmada district and around 100 workers trapped under a bridge near the river in Panchmahal district.

Earlier, the official had stated the possibility of releasing 19 lakh cusecs of water from the Narmada dam on the night of September 16. As a result, the district administration has ordered people living in low-lying areas near the Narmada (such as Shinor, Dabhoi and Karjan tehsil villages) to move to safe places.
