Later, he started living in Chalshi Dadri, Haryana. Gurdeep comes from a family of kabaddi players. His father Sanjay Kumar is a kabaddi coach who trained Border Security Force (BSF) players and his uncle Sukhvir Singh Sangwan was a former Indian National kabaddi team player. Gurdeep grew up playing kabaddi with his brother Nitesh Kumar under the guidance of his father. Gurdeep and Nitesh watched their uncle Sukhvir Singh Sangwan win kabaddi gold at the 2006 Asian Games, which sparked their passion for the sport. Gurdeep studied at Mahesh Dayanand University in Rohtak.
