“He was so funny and so sweet and so much fun to be around,” she added. “We went swimming in streams, drank beer at the local college bar, kissed in a field with tall grass. It was a magical summer.”

She continued that at the time he “shot the pilot Friends but it hadn’t aired yet,” so Perry “was nervous, hoping his big break was just around the corner.”

“It was,” Paltrow wrote. “We remained friends for a while until we broke up, but I was always happy when I saw him. I am very sad today, like many of us. I hope Matthew is finally at peace. I really want to.”

Perry died on Saturday at the age of 54 of an alleged drowning at his home in Los Angeles.

“We are heartbroken at the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother,” his family said in a statement. “Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and as a friend. You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love.”
