Robert Turner was the son of Florence and Robert Edward Turner Sr., who built billboards for advertising. When he was nine years old, his family moved to Savannah, Georgia.
Turner went to Mc Callie School to study. The school was a private all-boys institution located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. by Mc Callie, Vice President of the Club of Brown Debating Union.
