Gwyneth Paltrow’s Cropped Trench Is the New Classic I’m Adding to My Wardrobe — Shop Styles from $23

Gwyneth Paltrow’s latest look captivated me Inspector Gadget mode of operation.

That’s a bit of an exaggeration, especially since I’ve never actually watched the show, but I do know that when you see a PI on screen, they’re probably wearing a coat (with a magnifying glass nearby). I’m not a spy, but I became a detective the moment I saw the cropped trench coat Paltrow wore in New York on Monday — and I’m seriously hoping it becomes the new “It” jacket.

Why? I’ve worn my full length raincoat more times than I can count, but sometimes the length gets in the way. I was on a mission to find my own cropped trench coat, a lighter alternative to the full-length trench coats worn by Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Lawrence in previous seasons.

Paltrow accessorized the jacket with a pair of black cargo pants, another style I’ve been dying to add to my wardrobe, influenced by Mindy Kaling, Taylor Swift and Oprah. She completed the outfit with the “sandwich method”, matching white sneakers with a white shirt.

A cropped coat can hit the natural waist, just above the hips, or somewhere in between. For example, Lucky Brand’s waterproof style pictured above falls around the hips, while this Steve Madden one is cut closer to the navel—all that really matters is that not version to the floor. This will lighten the load and make it less tiring to carry. (Angelina Jolie is another celebrity who’s finding new ways to make raincoats more breathable. See: her short sleeve.)

This green is also a bit different from khaki and still fits the darker, moodier vibe that fall brings — and it’s nearly $150 off.

Since I’m not solving any real-life crimes here, there’s no getaway car in sight. Now, cargo pants? That must be acquired. The useful pockets match the utilitarian function of the trench plus, I wore my regular pants into oblivion. These cargo pants from Nordstrom come in sizes 00 to 16 and look similar to regular pants without the outer pockets, but somehow more trendy.

To be able to do my best, I will need a pair of thick sneakers. And luckily for you, (not so much for me since I don’t really have room for another pair of shoes) these are extremely affordable at under $50. “Best sneakers I’ve ever owned,” one customer wrote, adding, “I’m serious.”

Other celebrities who opt for thick soles include Jennifer Aniston and Lopez, so you should consider continuing the program too.
