The ship – which can accommodate 5,479 passengers on 16 decks – was heading to Galveston, Texas, when the child fell.

Witnesses said the boy was playing with friends he had made on the trip when he went over the cabin railing.

It crashed into the interior of the ship’s Central Park area, which is home to bars, restaurants and pubs.

Witnesses said the child fell from the family cabin on deck 14 into the atrium on deck 8.

Staff fought to revive him, but he died before the ship docked on September 8.

It is learned that the boy was on a cruise with his family to celebrate his birthday.

Passengers waiting to board the ship for the next cruise out of Galveston were told it had been delayed as an investigation was launched.

Royal Caribbean confirmed that the passenger had died on the plane, but did not provide further details.
