If we talk about the history and significance of this day, so long before the settlers arrived on the east coast of the United States, there were several people living there. The area around the site of the first Thanksgiving, known today as southeastern Massachusetts and eastern Rhode Island, was home to the Wampanoag people for more than 12,000 years. These people consisted of the Plymouth Colony, a group of English Protestants called Puritans who wanted to break away from the Church of England.
Carrying 101 men, children and women, the Mayflower crossed the river for 66 days and was thought to land where New York City now stands. However, the group was forced to settle in what is now Cape Cod, Massachusetts because of the wind. At that time, the festival of Thanksgiving was observed in a very important way that brought everyone together to express the help given by the Wampanoag Native Americans and in celebration of the Pilgrims who survived the harsh winter and faced disease and lack of food when they arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
