Harpal Randhawa is an Indian businessman and billionaire mining tycoon. He is the owner of Zimbabwean mining company RioZim and founder of private equity firm Global Emerging Markets Group (GEM). On September 29, 2023, his plane crashed due to a technical failure, resulting in his death along with his son.

Harpal Randhawa died on September 29, 2023 in a plane crash near the Murowa diamond mine in Zimbabwe. When the accident occurred, Harpal, his son Amir and four passengers were traveling on a Cessna 206 from Harare to RioZim’s Murowa diamond mine. This is a single engine aircraft owned by RioZim. Police said the accident occurred between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. and six people were confirmed dead, including two Zimbabweans and four foreigners, police said, according to Zimbabwean newspaper The Herald.

Police reports said the crash was caused by a technical glitch that may have caused an explosion in the air.
