Harry Potter star shares ‘disappointing’ truth about the movies, revealing details

Film series Warner Bros. on Harry Potter had the impossible task of doing justice to JK Rowling’s wildly popular books, and based on critical reviews and box office numbers, she more than met that requirement.

Starting in 2001 and ending in 2011 after eight films, the franchise proved to be a huge hit, making stars of its cast, particularly the core trio of Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, while highlighting the talents of its supporting cast as well.

However, when thousands of pages of literature were transferred to the screen, some things had to be left on the cutting room floor, much to the dismay of actress Bonnie Wright.

The 32-year-old made her film debut as Ginny Weasley in 2001. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone at the age of nine, appearing in every film as her role in the story became more and more crucial.

However, in a new appearance on the Inside of You podcast with Michael Rosenbaum, the star shared her thoughts on how much of her character doesn’t actually travel from page to screen.

She stated that she did as much as she could with what she was given in the script, saying, “There just wasn’t room for a lot of changes in those scripts,” she added. “There were a million executives going through all of them.”

Bonnie continued, “I think maybe I realized, and I don’t take it so much to heart now, that I kind of felt like maybe my anxiety was kind of like, ‘Oh, I’m going to be seen as portraying this character badly,’ but later realizing that I didn’t really get a chance to do that.’ So it wasn’t really my ‘mistake’.”

The English star, who has since become famous for her directing and independent work, expressed that she felt the same disappointment that fans of the youngest Weasley felt.

“And when fans share that disappointment, they do it in a way that says, ‘We know it wasn’t you. We just wanted you more.’ And it’s the same with every character.”

“If only they could have been five-hour movies, but it would probably take two years to shoot each one or something like that.”

Bonnie was honest about her feelings of frustration at not seeing her character feel fully realized, echoing the general sentiment of fans, who felt the progression of Ginny and Harry’s romance wasn’t organic enough.

“It was a bit disappointing at times,” she continued. “Because there were parts of the character that just weren’t coming through because there weren’t scenes for it. So that made me feel a little anxious or just frustrated, I guess.”

However, she did talk about the experience of growing up on the set of Hogwarts and learning about filmmaking from a very young age.

“I got an amazing view of the world of film. I was so interested in not only the role of the actor, but all the other amazing things that made the films what they were. I was so exposed to just the attention to detail, the craftsmanship, and the quality of the work was what which set me up.”
