Snape first appears in the books as a teacher at Hogwarts, but it soon becomes apparent that there’s more to him than that. For a while, he looked like he was on the side of evil, only to be later revealed to be a hero. However, his life was far from perfect, and there were many sad things about Snape.
difficult childhood
A person’s childhood has a great impact on what kind of person he will become and what kind of life he will live in the future. For many, childhood means happiness and carefreeness, but that was not the case for young Severus Snape, who deserved better.
He grew up poor and had an abusive father, so Severus’ only joy was his studies and his friendship with Lily.
he was bullied
Even after Severus Snape entered Hogwarts, his life wasn’t all roses and sunshine. In fact, he soon became the target of bullying – thanks to James Potter and his group of friends.
Even though James didn’t want Snape to die or be seriously injured, he still made his school life more difficult than it should have been.
He watched Lily fall in love with James
Severus might still be dissatisfied if Lily chose anyone other than James as her partner, but he might be better off accepting it. But when Lily falls in love with the guy who bullied Snape for years, Snape understandably feels disappointed and betrayed.
This also explains his later hatred for Harry, and his desire to protect the young boy. Snape hated Harry’s father but loved his mother, and he didn’t want Harry to die because of Lily.
then he lost her
Some may view Snape’s relationship with Lily as one of obsession, but he did back off while Lily moved on with her life, even if it meant Lily marrying a man who had bullied Snape. While Snape did go to the Potters after Voldemort’s attack, this was a natural reaction.
After all, wanting to protect the people Snape loved felt like an obvious move. Losing Lily was painful for Severus, he still wanted her to be alive and happy.
He put his life in danger many times
Snape’s life as a double agent working for both Voldemort and Dumbledore was fraught with danger. He had to watch his every word and expression to make sure Voldemort and the Death Eaters didn’t learn the truth about him.
Living in a constant state of anxiety is not easy for anyone, and although Snape seemed to have dealt with it, he probably wanted to live a calmer life.
no one appreciates it
Snape often risked his life as he walked the line between Dumbledore and Voldemort, right and wrong, good and evil. But given the secrecy surrounding Snape’s work, no one except Dumbledore knew that Snape was a double agent – until, of course, Harry and his friends found out.
This gave Snape a reputation as a traitor and a villain, even though he was neither.
He must kill Dumbledore
As Snape examined Dumbledore’s injuries, he knew what was coming and knew that the Headmaster of Hogwarts did not have long to live. But if Dumbledore hadn’t brought up another thing, he was ready to keep trying to cure him.
Dumbledore asked Snape to kill him, which was the last thing Snape wanted to do given his respect for Dumbledore and their friendship. But in the end, Snape went against his will and killed Dumbledore, protecting Draco Malfoy in the process, since it was Draco who was originally tasked with killing Dumbledore.
he never got happiness
There is no denying that Snape could be cruel and he also ridiculed some of his students and even bullied them. But one still wonders how his character would have been different if his life had been happier.
Snape knew little about happiness in life. He only had two close friends – Lily and Dumbledore – and he couldn’t stop either of them from dying. So he must have been a very lonely man.
he tried to save lily
This question is a bit controversial, but it still counts. When Snape learned of the prophecy and realized what it meant for Lily, the woman he had never stopped loving, he tried to convince Voldemort to spare Lily’s life, but he failed.
Snape, on the other hand, was not so keen on begging Voldemort to spare James or Harry. Regardless, his efforts to save Lily failed.
his passing
Snape’s greatest wish was to defeat Voldemort, but he hasn’t seen that since his death before Harry’s final confrontation with Voldemort.
Many people died in the final battle, but Snape’s death had a greater impact because he helped ensure that Harry lived long enough to defeat Voldemort in the first place.
