He was bested at the event by six-year-old Noah Nicholson, who pelted the prince with his stuffed toys and laughed as Harry took them.

Prince Harry noticed that Noah was carrying a toy giraffe called “Raffy” – the same toy the six-year-old had when they first met in 2019.

He said, “Is this the same? No way! Every parent has a spare. I have at least six spares.

“My daughter Lili has these Lovies.”

Harry jokingly told Noah he was “so mean” after he proceeded to throw him “Raffy” and a toy white cat named George.

The Duke wore a sophisticated navy blue suit, a crisp white shirt and a vibrant light blue tie.

Tonight, at the annual event in London, Harry presented the award for an inspirational child aged 4 to 6 and gave a speech.

He praised the group of “little legends” honored at the awards ceremony for “uplifting all those around them” despite serious illnesses.

Harry paid tribute to the children and teenagers recognized at the WellChild Awards who are acting as carers, fundraising or simply getting on with life while dealing with difficult conditions.

Harry told the youngsters and their families: “Thank you for your courage, perseverance, kindness and of course your humour.

“And thank you for being who you are and lifting up everyone around you. The WellChild Awards is an event that always inspires me.

“The stories of young people who fight against difficulties, live lives filled with medical procedures, hospital stays and endless examinations, remind us of the strength of the human spirit.

“For many of us, it’s an everyday life we can hardly imagine, and yet somehow, the young people I meet are always smiling and every room they walk into is seemingly lit with warmth and positivity.”

It is his thirteenth appearance after becoming a patron of the charity 16 years ago.

Body language expert Judi James on Harry

This return to the UK shows a return to the old Harry in terms of his mood and body language.

This is always an emotional event for him, but also one where he truly shines, using his skills with children and his authentic passion for the event to allow him to return to his best during this solo performance.

Overall, Harry again appears primarily as a royal, arriving with an open-mouthed ‘Oh’ in enthusiastic recognition, then using a brisk walk and leaning forward to indicate acerbic wit before greeting his hosts with some animated handshake that suggests he’s glad and maybe even relieved to be back in the UK supporting a familiar cause with people he knows.

His closeness signals to the children are relaxed but powerful as ever here as he sits with his torso resting on his knees to tackle them.

Unlike some members of the royal family, Harry’s body language with children appears relaxed, spontaneous and without any fear as they grab his chin or playfully throw their toys at him.

He seems to know and remember his previous encounters with them and in those moments he seems genuinely happy.

His speech includes body language rituals of humility and respect for the audience, such as folded hands, rubbing and praying which he uses as a baton, and four claps as he tells them they are ‘little legends’.

Harry supported WellChild in their work to improve the quality of life of underprivileged children and their loved ones.

Ahead of today’s gathering, he said: “Once again I am honored to attend this year’s WellChild Awards, which celebrate the extraordinary courage and achievements of children living with complex medical needs.

“These amazing young people, along with the dedicated carers, nurses and professionals who tirelessly support them, are an inspiration to us all.

“It is a real privilege to recognize such outstanding individuals.”

It is not yet known whether Harry will meet his dad King Charles or Prince William during his stay in the United Kingdom.

Harry presented the award to Noah from Grimsby.

The brave young man weighed just two kilograms when he was born prematurely at 27 weeks.

Since then, he has had 28 operations, 14 of which were life-saving operations, and he spent most of his childhood in hospital wards.

Noah has cerebral palsy, chronic lung disease and short bowel disease – meaning he needs round-the-clock care.

Other well-known faces and supporters of WellChild are expected to arrive today.

WellChild chief executive Matt James commented: “Across the UK, increasing numbers of children and young people are living with long-term, complex medical needs.

“Together with their families, they struggle with exceptional challenges every day.

“Through the WellChild Awards 2024, in collaboration with GSK, we aim to highlight the enormous difficulties they face and celebrate their extraordinary resilience and spirit.

“This event also offers an opportunity to pay tribute to the selfless commitment of those who support them – be it siblings, foster parents or professionals who have gone above and beyond to give these children the best possible chance to thrive.”

It comes after Harry spent the weekend alone in New York – leaving wife Meg and children Archie, five, and Lilibet, three, in California.

The dad-of-two was spotted heading to a tattoo parlor in Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

Harry had heavy security with him as he exited East Side Ink – where it’s understood he didn’t actually get the tattoo and was there for a publicity stunt, according to Page 6.

He also appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and took on the new attraction Tonightmares.

In the Rockerfeller Center house of horrors, the royals were filmed screaming “Jesus, f**k!” as zombies and ghosts jumped out at him.

During the trip, he also paid tribute to his late mother Princess Diana at a Halo Trust event.

And it is the second time in a few weeks that Harry has returned to England alone after attending a memorial service for his uncle Lord Robert Fellowes at the end of August.

Royal expert Phil Dampier said: “It’s significant that he’s doing so much on his own now.

“They live separate lives as Harry seems to be trying to figure out exactly what his future holds.

“I guess Harry felt like a spare part.

“He wants more fulfilling roles for himself so maybe we’ll see more of him here.”

Meanwhile, the Princess Royal also had a public engagement this afternoon.

Princess Anne, who is a colonel in the Royal Logistic Corps, met with the commander, Colonel Gareth Allen.

She also saluted members of the Gurkha Support Battalion of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC).

It came as the royal enjoyed a visit to Imjin Barracks in Innsworth, Gloucestershire.

And King Charles was in Scotland with Queen Camilla by his side to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament.

The royals visited Holyrood on Saturday to meet local heroes and watch musical acts.

The monarch gave a moving speech to Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yousaf, calling the opening of the Scottish Parliament in 1999 “a new dawn” for the country.

His Majesty said: “This place has not only prospered.

“But it does testify to the enduring relationship between Parliament, the Crown and the people of Scotland.”

He added that the country has always held a “uniquely special place in the hearts of my family and myself” while also paying tribute to the memory of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.
