Harvinder Singh is an Indian para-archery athlete who achieved a historic feat by winning a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, becoming the first Indian to win an archery medal at the Paralympics.

Harvinder Singh Dhanju was born in 1990 (31 years old; as of 2021) in Guhla Cheeka village, Ketal, Haryana. Born into a middle-class farmer family in Haryana, he received his primary education at Guhla Cheeka, a small village near Kaital. He studied in a village school until grade 10 and then went to the city of Ketal to continue his studies. After completing his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Panjab University, Patiala, Harvind started pursuing PhD (economics) at the same university.

Harvinder Singh’s father Paramjeet Singh was a farmer. His mother’s name was late Harbhajan Kaur. Harvind has an elder brother with whom he lives in Kaital, Haryana.

Profession

After winning multiple medals at various state and national level events, the World Para Archery Championships in Beijing in 2017 gave him his first opportunity to represent India at an international competition; he was ranked seventh overall. Harvinder Singh became the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in a major Para Games when he won the men’s open individual recurve event at the Asian Para Games 2018. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated him on his achievement in a tweet.

After participating in the 2019 World Archery Para Championships in the Netherlands, he qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. On September 3, 2021, Harvind won India’s first Paralympic archery medal after losing 6-4 to world number 10 Kevin Mather of the United States in the semi-finals.
