Hashmatullah Shahidi was born on Friday, November 4, 1994 in Logar, Afghanistan (age 29; as of 2023). His zodiac sign is Scorpio. His father introduced him to cricket when he was a child and at the age of nine he started playing in local tournaments. When his father saw him playing well, his father enrolled him in a cricket academy in Kabul where he received further training. He later became a professional cricketer.

Hashmutullah Shahidi played his first Test match against India on June 14, 2018 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. He scored his first Test fifty against Ireland on 15 March 2019, scoring 61 runs in the first innings. On March 10, 2021, he scored 200 not out against Zimbabwe, becoming the first Afghanistan batsman to score a double century in Tests.

- His batting style is left-handed and his bowling style is right-arm off-ball.
- During the 2019 ODI World Cup against England, Harshmatullah was hit on the head by the bouncer of England bowler Mark Wood. His helmet cracked from the impact, he fell to the ground, and was ordered to retire from the game; however, he continued to hit. In the post-match press conference, he said he left the ground to continue batting because his mother was watching and his brother was also present.
