Hayden Panettiere Says Her Pink Hair Was the Product of a ‘Creative’ Refresh amid Hollywood Strikes: ‘Why Not?’

Hayden Panettiere reveals what inspired her to go pink.

In September, the 34-year-old actress surprised her fans by swapping her signature blonde hair for a sassy pastel pink shade. Now, in a new interview with IRK magazine this month, Panettiere explained that her suddenly free schedule amid the Hollywood strikes gave her the chance to experiment with her look in a way she hadn’t been able to before.

“I’ve had pink hair before and I loved it! I’ve been begging my team to let me dye it for a while now, and with work and photoshoots on my schedule, I couldn’t,” she told the magazine.

“Then the strike started, so I thought… why not!?” she continued. “I’m not shooting anything right now, and it’s an opportunity to do what I want with it and be creative in a different way.”

When Panettiere first debuted her pink ‘effect’ by sharing a selfie on Instagram, it wasn’t clear at the time if the color change was only temporary, especially since the photo appeared to have been taken in a photo studio.

“Pink hair doesn’t care!” she captioned the post, adding the hashtags #photoshoot #pinkhair #glamteam.

However, Panettiere has since stuck with pink. She even gave it extra strength with the addition of green at the roots. “I love my new watermelon 🍉 vibes up top!” she joked on Instagram in September when she shared two photos of her updated look.

She gave another nod to her watermelon inspiration in a follow-up post that featured a photo of her with a box of South Patch Kids Watermelon candies. “Yum 🍉,” she wrote.

The Nashville star told IRK that she has “always loved color” when it comes to her overall style.

“Especially bright colors, so that hasn’t changed,” she told the outlet, explaining that when she grew up she started experimenting and exploring her identity through fashion.

“I started to be encouraged to embrace who I am and the kind of image I want to project,” she said. “Doing this made me love fashion a lot more because it became a creative and liberating form of expression – not something that limited me.”

While she didn’t offer any details, she said her collection will be “different and unlike anything else.”
