Henry Cavill 'Was Sick to His Stomach' After Filming Cameo Moment with Real Cigar in 'Deadpool & Wolverine'

Shawn Levy reveals how Henry Cavill’s is Deadpool & Wolverine a cameo was created.

The Deadpool & Wolverine director, 56, recently spoke with The New York Times about some of the film’s biggest surprises, including Cavill’s appearance as a variant of Wolverine, which he said was a perfect casting decision.

“In the case of Henry, it wasn’t long after everything went down with DC that the news came that Henry had been replaced as Superman,” Levy said.

“Given that Deadpool is in constant conversation with culture, it seemed like a great opportunity to first of all cast Henry Cavill in a role that he would smash, but also to poke fun at that other comic book-based movie studio and play with some self-awareness “, he continued, pointing out that it was Ryan Reynolds who “brilliantly” called Cavill’s Logan “Cavillrine.”

While the film claims there can only be one Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, Levy said he’s excited to see what Cavill, 41, does with his brief portrayal of the character.

“I think we all were, including poor Henry Cavill, who not only had that pumped-up muscular body, but had a lit cigar in his mouth the entire day of filming,” Levy said. “I remember hearing the next day that Henry was sick to his stomach because he had been inhaling cigar smoke for eight hours straight, but he never wavered.”

Cavill commented on his film performance on Instagram, writing: “Just to be sure, I shaved off my mustache for this one. Just a mustache.”

He is one of several cameos in which he appears Deadpool and Wolverine, which include Jennifer Garner reprising her role as Elektra, Reynolds’ wife Blake Lively and their children.

For Levy, however, Reynolds, 47, and Jackman, 55, made the film “electric.”

“I knew they were professionals. I knew they were the sweetest gentlemen, but when you see them as Deadpool and Wolverine, something electric happens. And you’re in the presence of an icon, and even as a good friend of theirs, that gave me a thrill for days,” he told PEOPLE in February.
