Investigative program Evil Lives Here is preparing to revisit the horrific case of Morgan Metzer’s assault by her ex-husband, Rodney Metzer, in a future episode. The case, which has garnered enough attention from true crime fans, had a bitter ex-husband disguise himself as a masked gunman and attack his ex-wife about a month after their divorce.
What made this case even more astonishing was that Rodney pretended to be the hero of the hour by rushing to save his ex-wife and then immediately contacting the police. His account, however, contained significant errors that led officials to mark him as the prime suspect. Additional evidence eventually convinced him to confess to the crime and he was sentenced to 70 years in prison, with 25 years suspended.
Rodney Metzer’s Attack on Morgan Metzer: Five Simple Facts
These five simple facts about Morgan Metzer’s violent assault summarize the key circumstances of the case.
1) Morgan started dating Rodney when she was only 15 years old.
Morgan and Rodney spent most of their lives together, despite the tragic outcome. Morgan first met Rodney when she was 15 years old. She married him when she was 21 and they have been together ever since. After the wedding, they even had twins. Morgan filed for divorce ten years later after years of tolerating Rodney’s unsavory tendencies.
2) After they broke up, Rodney tried to make up with Morgan Metzer many times.
After the divorce, Rodney moved on with the love of his life. According to insiders, Rodney repeatedly begged Morgan to give him another chance. He even pretended to have cancer to get her sympathy. Rodney allegedly returned to the residence many times and slept on the sofa after they broke up. Authorities later discovered a forged medical record and a farewell letter. Morgan feels that Rodney tried to stop her from being with someone else. She stated:
“He intended to kill me and himself. I don’t think he wanted anyone else to have me because he couldn’t have me. All this was planned; it was not a random act of insanity.β

3) Rodney’s vague account of how he found out about Morgan caused officials to distrust him.
Morgan stated that he arrived at the scene of the incident shortly after it occurred because someone was banging on his window and yelling Morgan Metzer’s name. The authorities were not convinced by his statement and arrested him for lying to the investigators.
4) Rodney was a victim of gaslighting and domestic violence.
Rodney apparently had strong emotional outbursts, causing Morgan to hide in a closet with her children. He also established a pattern of gaslighting, causing Morgan to think she was responsible for certain events for years. According to reports, he had previously violently assaulted his wife.
5) Rodney was indicted on 14 counts and sentenced to 70 years in prison.
Rodney confessed to the attack on Morgan Metzer after the evidence was discovered. He was charged with a variety of crimes, including kidnapping, assault, home invasion, armed robbery, aggravated assault and false imprisonment. He is currently incarcerated at Augusta State Medical Prison in Grovetown, Georgia and is not expected to be released until 2045. The next episode of Evil Lies Here will air on Investigation Discovery on July 31, 2022.
