Here’s Why Cindy Crawford ‘Wouldn’t Give’ Kaia Gerber Her Engagement Ring (Exclusive)

If you had to choose one thing from fashion icon Cindy Crawford’s wardrobe, what would it be?

While chatting with the iconic supermodel and her 22-year-old daughter at the Planet OMEGA show in New York, PEOPLE asked Kaia Gerber a question, whose eyes lit up with excitement when asked.

“What do you want?” Crawford, 57, echoed the question of Gerber, who has followed in her mother’s fashion footsteps, carving her own path as an in-demand model in the industry.

“Be careful what you ask!” joked Gerber — to which her mom clarified, “You don’t get it now, I’m just saying you should check it out.”

While Gerber took time to carefully consider the vast amount of possibilities before answering the hypothetical question, Crawford jumped in to share with PEOPLE the memory she’ll be passing on to her daughter.

“You know what I think I’d give you?” He said Super models star when you talk to Gerber. “So for my 20th anniversary, my husband gave me three eternity rings,” she began explaining about husband Rande Gerber, whom she married in 1998 after splitting from ex-husband Richard Gere in 1995.

“One [eternity ring] one was supposed to represent him, one was supposed to represent Kaia, and one was supposed to represent Presley [Gerber]” Crawford told PEOPLE at the event. “I would give it to her,” she says before explaining the piece of jewelry she “wouldn’t give” to Gerber.

“I wouldn’t give her my engagement ring because probably whoever proposes to you, you’ll want to choose the ring, even though it’s a special piece,” he explains.

Gerber is currently in a relationship with Austin Butler, with whom she has been linked since they sparked romance rumors in December 2021 and went public with their relationship in March 2022. In the months that followed, they attended various events together and hit the red carpet one next to the other.

After her mother’s response, Gerber jumped in with a tongue-in-cheek reply: “I wanted to pick your engagement ring!” she says with a laugh. “But you can have that one. You have to wear it. I know.”

Crawford replied, “No—I was saying… well I won’t need it in the end. But don’t bore me with it, that’s what I’m saying!”

“This is so morbid,” Gerber says, confirming his answer: “I’ll take the eternity ring.”

Elsewhere in the mother-daughter duo’s chat with PEOPLE at Planet OMEGA, Kaia got another tough question about which of her mom’s “iconic” looks she’d like to recreate one day.

When asked what’s on my mind while at the Planet OMEGA show in New York, the model daughter of Cindy Crawford told PEOPLE, “There are so many things that I love and think are so iconic.”

To narrow down the list, Gerber mentioned a few memorable outfits from her supermodel mom, like Crawford’s low-back Versace gown she wore to the 1991 Oscars and her iconic 1992 Pepsi commercial look.

“But it’s like some things are so good you don’t even want to touch them,” Gerber continued. “And I think in some of those moments I just say, ‘Leave them there,’ you know?”
