The film takes on the theme of female empowerment and talks about the freedom of choice that women should have. Critics considered the film to be “sexist or man-offensive” due to the dialogue in the film, quote,
It’s my choice to get married or not to get married… it’s my choice to have sex before marriage or to have sex outside of marriage…”
Adajania later claimed that his film was misunderstood by audiences. He clarified in an interview that he had no intention of hurting people’s perceptions and ideas. However, he also said that the misunderstanding and criticism of his film made it even more viral. Speaking about this in an interview, he said,
Ironically, it was this misunderstanding that made #MyChoice go viral, and if that’s what it takes to get people talking about gender equality, then I’m willing to take the hit and be misunderstood. Empower women more and let’s hope healthy discussions about gender equality can continue. ”
