military career
After completing class XII, Avinash Sable enlisted in the Indian Army and was attached to the 5th Battalion of the Mahar Regiment. In 2013, he was posted to Siachen Glacier as a havildar. In an interview, he talked about his experience in Siachen and said,
There is snow all around me. I had never seen snow before this, and there was nothing for me to do besides your duties. There is no internet in the area and I am a junior student. So, I didn’t know what to do or who to talk to. ”
In 2014, he was posted as an infantryman in Lalgarh Jattan, near the Pakistan border in Rajasthan, and in 2015, he was posted to Sikkim. Later, Avinash was promoted to the rank of Naib Subedar in the Indian Army.

In 2015, while serving in the Indian Army, Avinash’s colleagues insisted that he participate in a cross-country competition organized by the Indian Army. Initially, he participated in sporting events organized by the Indian Army. Speaking in an interview about his participation in Indian Army sporting events, Avinash said:
I just started running in 2015. The Army had a track and field scouting program and they selected me as a cross country runner. “
Later, in June 2017, Avinash made his debut as a steeplechaser in the 3000m steeplechase event at the 2017 Indian Federation Cup in Patiala with a time of 9:06.42. In July 2021, he participated in the Tokyo Olympics and finished seventh with a time of 8 hours, 18 minutes and 12 seconds.
In September 2021, he participated in the National Athletics Open held in Bhubaneswar. In July 2022, Avinash participated in the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, where he finished 11th with a time of 8 minutes and 31.75 seconds.

Facts/Trivia
- In 2018, Avinash joined the national team and received training from coach Nikolay Snesarev to prepare for the 2018 Asian Games. A few months later, however, Thybulle returned to Army coach Amrish Kumar. It is said that it was the rigorous training of coach Nikolai that brought him back to the Army coaching side. In an interview, Avinash talked about his coach Nikolay Snesarev and said:
“Coach Snesarev is a very hard-working coach. He makes me run a lot. He definitely makes me run about 150 kilometers a week,”
- In April 2018, Avinash injured his ankle and failed to participate in the 2018 Asian Games.
- In 2019, Avinash broke the national record at the 2019 Federation Cup in Patiala and qualified for the 2019 World Athletics Championships. He became the first Indian obstacle course athlete to qualify for the World Athletics Championships after Dina Ram in 1991.
- In 2021, Avinash represented India at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He became the first Indian obstacle racer to qualify for the Olympic 3000m obstacle course since 1952.
- In an interview, Avinash spoke about how mental health affected his performance at the World Championships. He added that he did not have any mental conditioning coach so he later started meditating and practicing yoga. This led to him performing well at the 2023 Asian Games, winning two medals, one gold and one silver. Avinash Sable said,
I was at the peak of my fitness during the World Championships. I thought I had what it takes to win a medal, but I don’t know what happened to me. Since I couldn’t get a medal after training hard for two years, it didn’t hurt to look for a different training ground and a new approach. “
