“Further updates will follow as they become available. Incident 221 dated 25/05/24.”
The RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight was due to be displayed on World War II Day at the Lincolnshire Aviation Center at East Kirkby Airfield.
The civilian airfield is only nine miles from RAF Coningsby where the BBMF is based and has close links with the RAF.
As part of the “Chain, Tanks and Military Machines” event, the Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane were supposed to fly over today at 1:30 p.m.
The pilot was killed last August when a replica Spitfire crashed near the A-road in the Oxfordshire village of Enstone.
Spitfire enthusiast Trevor Bailey warned that flying the plane was “great fun, but it can also be a challenge” before the horrific crash.
Another Spitfire flipped and nose-dived in front of horrified onlookers during an air show in northern France in 2017.
What is Spitfire?
Spitfires played a key role in the war, especially during the Battle of Britain which earned the aircraft its status as a powerhouse.
Designed as a short-range, high-performance aircraft, more than 20,300 Spitfires were built to ensure British success during World War II.
The Battle of Britain, which lasted several months between July and October 1940, cemented its place in history as a turning point in the war.
This proved to be a watershed moment for Nazi territorial aims as they then focused on conquering Britain.
Aware of the resilience of the RAF, German planes bombed British air bases until the fall of 1940.
But eventually the Luftwaffe and Hitler’s plans for Britain were wrested from the Nazis after the British gained air supremacy, thanks in large part to the legendary fighter plane.
