Season 2 finale The house of the dragon it’s finally here, and while the Black Team suffered one crushing loss this season, most of the main characters have managed to see another day – at least so far.
Princess Rhaenys Targaryen (played by Eve Best) has been one big loss on display so far this season. She was killed by Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and his dragon, Vhagar, during what the actress called a “kamikaze mission” that really marked the beginning of a war between the Blacks – who support Rhaenyra’s claim to the throne – and the Greens – who support Aegon’s claim to the throne .
Rhaenys and her dragon, Meleys, managed to escape after Aemond and Vhagar fiercely attacked Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) and his dragon, Sunfyre. But she didn’t make it out of Rook’s Rest alive in the cataclysmic fourth episode of Season 2.
Aside from Rhaenys, however, all of the major players in the booming Targaryen civil war are still alive by the season two finale, which begs the question: when will they all die—and, moreover, by whose hands?
Given that the series is based on the 2018 book by George RR Martin. Fire and bloodthere’s at least a loose outline for each character’s lifeline – so let’s see who makes it to the end.

When does Rhaenyra die?
In the book, Rhaenyra, played by Emma D’Arcy in the show, dies at Aegon’s hands – or, technically, from the jaws of his dragon Sunfyre. She continues to serve as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms in King’s Landing, albeit briefly, before being driven out of the Red Keep by the Little People, and upon returning to Dragonstone, she finds Aegon there.
Her former council member, Ser Alfred Broome, played by Jamie Kenna in the series, is revealed to have betrayed her and given control of the island to Aegon, which then allows his dragon to kill her – his half-sister! – on his order. In the book, her second youngest son Aegon watches her die.
Based on the show’s pace so far, it’s likely that Rhaenyra’s death won’t come until late in Season 3 – or, potentially, in Season 4.

When does Daemon die?
During the second season, Daemon Targaryen, played by Matt Smith, seemed to be on the verge of death at all times as he was driven mad by nightmares and dreams during his time at Harrenhal.
However, the King Consort eventually ends up in the hands of his nephew, Aemond, as the royals and their dragons conquer him in a long-awaited battle. In the book, Daemon jumps off the back of his dragon Caraxes to join Aemond on Vhagar and gets the ultimate revenge by gouging out his only healthy eye – shout Lucerys!
The pair then both fall into the water below them, with their dragons in tow, but Daemon’s body is never found – stick with the theories!

When does Aemond die?
As mentioned earlier, Aemond’s and Daemon’s deaths take place simultaneously, as the nephew and uncle fight the dragon in the book and in the end, both go down. Their fight ends with the princes and their dragons, Vhagar and Caraxes, landing in the lake.
However, unlike Daemon, Aemond’s body was discovered, still bound to Vhagar.
Presumably Season 3, for which the show was just renewed, will see how Daemon and Aemond end.

When does Aegon die?
Aegon finds himself in dire straits as the second season draws to a close and unfortunately, he doesn’t have long to live. In the book, he dies of poison – although it’s never made clear exactly who is responsible for the death – but his death comes after years of civil war and much more back and forth between him and Rhaenyra.
When Aegon died, he had already returned to King’s Landing – having killed Rhaenyra at Dragonstone with his dragon Sunfyre – and was back on the throne.
As for how this affects the series, it’s possible that Aegon will be alive for the entire series or until the final episode, depending on how long the season is extended.

When does Ser Criston Cole die?
The longevity of Ser Criston Cole, played by Fabien Frankel, is another question on fans’ minds as the common soldier continues to rise through the ranks at the Red Keep.
In the book, Cole lasts most of the Targaryen Civil War – sorry, Team Black! – and was killed during a battle called the Butcher’s Ball by a mix of Riverlands and Northern soldiers supporting Cregan Stark’s call to arms in support of Rhaenyra.
Depending on how the third season ends the war, Cole could see an end in the upcoming season, or he could continue to defy the odds and continue to push through a potential fourth season.
