generalize
- The ending of “Avengers 4: Endgame” left one unanswered question: How did the old Steve Rogers return to the current Marvel Universe timeline after spending time in the past with Peggy Carter?
- The Russells and the writers have conflicting explanations. The Russos believe Steve created a branch timeline, while the writers believe he stayed in the main timeline of the Marvel Universe.
- If Steve creates a branching timeline, it’s unclear how he would return without a time travel platform. If he stays in the main timeline, he could simply wait for the right moment to appear on the bench. Marvel needs to give a clear explanation.
Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame Captain America’s last unsolved mystery: How did the old Steve Rogers return to the original Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline?this Avengers: Endgame The finale featured Steve Rogers venturing through the Quantum Realm and traveling through time using Pym Particles in order to return all the Infinity Stones to their original locations in the timeline. Then, instead of returning to the present, he chooses to stay in the past and spend his life with Peggy Carter.
The last shot Avengers: Endgame Did Steve finally dance with Peggy? He promised her to come all the way back Captain America: The First Avenger. It symbolizes that Steve finally stops sacrificing himself for the greater good and commits a selfish act for once – the opposite of the ending of Tony Stark’s Iron Man, the selfish genius billionaire playboy who sacrificed his life for the greater good. He sacrificed his life to defeat Thanos. However, the film’s ending left an unanswered question, as it never explained how Steve returned to the current MCU timeline.
The ending of Endgame doesn’t answer the question of how Captain America will return
Moments later, instead of returning to the platform the Avengers used to time travel, the old Captain America appeared on a bench by a nearby lake. However, it was never revealed how Steve became the replacement. He did not return to the time travel platform, which is the only one of its kind that exists, as it was rebuilt after Thanos destroyed the Avengers compound in his attack.
When the old Captain America returned, the conversation between Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson mostly focused on the shield and the superhero’s cape. While Steve did mention his decision to be reborn, he didn’t reveal exactly how he achieved this or how he returned to the present. The conversation then quickly moves to Steve handing Captain America’s shield to Sam, and then the movie cuts to Steve dancing with Peggy.
Russo brothers explain Steve Rogers’ reappearance in ‘Endgame’
To understand how old Captain America is when he returns from the past, it’s important to know exactly where he is, and unfortunately, not everyone involved in telling Steve Rogers’ story agrees. Avengers: Endgame Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have said they believe Steve created a branching timeline while stuck in the past. If this were true, it would mean that if Steve wanted to return to the main timeline of the Marvel Universe, he would have to travel between timelines, not just backwards or forwards in the main timeline. But it’s unclear whether the Pym suits and particles are able to travel from the branch timeline to the main timeline.
Another problem with this explanation is that MCU Phase 4 introduced the Time Variance Authority. If Steve created a branch timeline, TVA would surely intervene and either get rid of him or return him to his original time. So if Steve lives in a branch timeline, Marvel needs to explain how he would travel from that timeline to the MCU’s main timeline, and why the branch timeline is allowed to exist.
However, the Russos’ vision of what happened to Steve differed from that of screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. They claim that Steve remains in the main timeline of the Marvel Universe, staying in the past and not creating any branch timelines because he was always supposed to be there. This explanation addresses the issue of branching realities, and does provide a possible way for the old Captain America to show up at the end. Avengers: Endgame.
The ending of ‘Endgame’ still has an unsolved mystery
If the Russos are right and Steve created a branch timeline that allowed him to live a life separate from the main Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline with Peggy, then he’ll need to find a way to go back. Since this is a different timeline without Captain America as part of the Avengers, it stands to reason that they may never develop the technology he needs to return home. Or, if they did, circumstances might have been different, preventing him from returning. However, if Steve can still use the suit and Pym Particles he used to put back the Infinity Stones, it’s unclear how he could return without the platform, as there may not be one in the branch timeline, and in the main timeline There is only one timeline in .
It would make more sense for the Russo brothers that Steve would be wrong to create an alternate reality rather than stay in the Marvel Universe’s timeline. This way, he can simply wait without the need for time travel or traveling between timelines. Of course, then he’d need to sneak to the bench with Sam, Bucky, and the Hulk’s backs turned, but that seems more feasible than the other options.
Still, this is all speculation based on what’s in the movie and conflicting statements from creative staff about what they think happened to Steve. The MCU has yet to explain in canon how Captain America returned to the main MCU timeline and gave the shield to Sam.no matter it happens Captain America: Brave New World, thunderbolt, Avengers: Kang Dynasty or Avengers: Secret WarsMarvel needs to finally solve this problem Avengers: Endgame Mystery and solve all the confusion surrounding when Captain America will return.
