How to Watch Indiana Jones Movies in Order

Indiana Jones is one of the most famous movie characters of all time. As an archaeologist and explorer, he embarks on adventures through faraway places and uses his daring heroism to save the world. Indiana Jones it also helped cement its star Harrison Ford as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading men.

“I never thought I’d be a leading man,” Ford told PEOPLE in 2023. “I just hoped I’d be able to make a living as an actor and not have to supplement my income with some other side hustle… I Thought I Was I would be happy to play a character in a regular TV show.”

The first would be chronologically The Chronicles of Young Indiana Jones series. Airing from 1992 to 1996, the series took place in two timelines, telling stories from Jones’ youth or teenage years, with the older Jones often narrating and introducing each episode.

Because of how different the show is from the movie series, fans don’t have to watch it to enjoy the movies. However, Ford reprized his role as Indy in the 1993 episode “History of the Blues”, making him officially The Chronicles of Young Indiana Jones canon.

Despite the second film being released, Temple of Doom is actually the first film chronologically, taking place in 1935. The film opens with Indy escaping from a failed encounter with a Shanghai crime boss…but he unwittingly escapes on a plane operated by the same boss’s organization.

Indy, along with lounge singer Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw) and getaway driver Short Round (Ke Huy Quan), are thrown into the jungles of India where they must survive cultists, crocodiles, traps and more.

In an interview with S. in 2008 EmpireLucas explained why Temple of Doom became a prequel. “We did it Temple Of Doom prequel because we didn’t want to use the same villains,” he said, saying they didn’t want to use Nazis as antagonists again.

Raiders of the Lost Ark

The first film in the franchise was originally titled Raiders of the Lost Arkbut after Indiana Jones became a franchise, it later became known as Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Set in 1936, Jones is recruited to help excavate the ancient Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis find it, as Hitler believes the artifact will grant his army divine powers.

The film’s world action and old-school adventure have been turned upside down robbers into a huge hit and created iconic cinematic moments like Indy running off a giant boulder.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Place of action in 1938. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade saw Indy face the Nazis again. This time, his father (Sean Connery) has disappeared while searching for the mythical Holy Grail. When Indy goes looking for him, he learns that his father was kidnapped by the Nazis.

In an interview with S. 2023 GQFord discussed a surprising insight into the making of the film: that Connery was a heavy sweater, so much so that he often shot scenes without pants, prompting Ford to do the same. “He turned up pantless because of the heat and I felt it was both necessary and appropriate to take his pants off,” he said. “So we had two men pantless who were photographed after the wait.”

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

2008, almost 20 years later The Last CrusadeIndy came back for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which was installed in 1957.

In the film, a young man named Mutt (Shia LaBeouf) tracks down Jones and informs him that one of his old cohorts has gone missing in South America while searching for the legendary crystal skull.

The duo must then race against the Soviets (led by Irina Spalko played by Cate Blanchett) to find the skull and save Indy’s friend. The film also reveals more about Mutt’s background, much to Indy’s surprise.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

The latest film in the Indiana Jones franchise is from 2023 Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Set in 1969, Indy has now retired from treasure hunting and spends his time teaching. But when his godson (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) steals a mysterious dial, he’s forced to cross the world again to retrieve the artifact and ensure it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.

Dial of fate is probably the conclusion Indiana Jones film series, in which Ford speaks Total movie 2023, “This is the last film in the series and this is the last time I will play the character. I suspect that will be the last time he appears in the film.”

What’s next for Indiana Jones?

While it is Indiana Jones movie franchise may be over (at least for now), there are still plenty of avenues for fans to explore Indiana Jones universe.

At the end of 2024, a new video game called Indiana Jones will be released Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The game is set in 1937, and takes place in between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusadeand follows Indy as he travels the world to stop sinister forces from harnessing an ancient power.

Fans can also continue to explore the world Indiana Jones at Disney parks around the world, including the Indy-themed roller coaster in Paris and the iconic dark ride at Disneyland in California.

Meanwhile, during the Disney Experiences show at D23 on Saturday, August 10, Josh D’Amaro, president of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, revealed that a new Indiana Jones-themed ride will be coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The new ride will be launched in 2027.
