Open Championship

The Open Championship, also known as the Open Championship or the British Open, is the oldest and one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world. Founded in 1860, it was originally held at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland and later rotated among coastal golf courses in the United Kingdom. Organized by the R&A, it is part of the four major men’s golf tournaments, along with the Masters, the PGA Championship and the US Open. As of 2019, it is the last major tournament of the year, taking place in mid-July.

The Open is aptly named because it is theoretically open to all golfers, pros and amateurs. In practice, it consists mainly of professionals with a few leading amateurs invited to participate. The success of the tournament inspired the creation of numerous other open golf tournaments around the world. Cameron Smith is the current champion, winning the 2022 Open at St Andrews with a score of 268.
