Hugh Grant Cracks Surprise Joke About His 1995 Arrest for Lewd Conduct at Heretic Premiere: Here's What He Said

Nearly 30 years after Hugh Grant’s infamous 1995 disorderly conduct arrest in Los Angeles, the actor has some jokes to tell.

Grant appeared on stage at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood, California on Thursday, October 24, along with his A heretic actresses Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East, as well as film duo Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. There, while introducing the film at its premiere, the 64-year-old actor complied when Woods asked him to say a few words to the audience before the film began playing, per The Hollywood Reporter.

“I don’t have anything interesting to add to that other than it’s very nice to be here. Hollywood Boulevard has always been a happy place for me,” Grant said in the video he captured THR reporter Chris Gardner. The joke — a reference to his June 27, 1995, arrest for lewd behavior with a sex worker on Sunset Boulevard — left Grant’s co-stars and the audience in stitches.

“Nice of AFI to have us, nice of you to show up, nice of these girls for being brilliant in the movie, nice of these two weirdos for putting me in it and nice of the producers for so they paid me a little bit,” Grant added before the film’s release. “So I hope you enjoy yourself.”

Grant’s arrest generated a lot of media attention during the 90s — so much so that he publicly apologized for the incident on Tonight’s show just days after it happened while he was promoting his film Nine months. The actor was eventually fined $1,000, placed on two years of probation and required to participate in an AIDS education program as punishment for the incident, according to The Independent.

Grant addressed the scandal while speaking with PEOPLE back in 2018, saying he “was just being an idiot” with his decisions at the time. “I didn’t try to say, ‘I have this mental problem.’ I just said ‘I did it’.”

He was dating Elizabeth Hurley at the time of the incident; while they stayed together during the scandal, they broke up in 2000, although they remain friends today. “We are like brother and sister. . . . I think it’s partly because we went from nothing to somewhere together,” he told PEOPLE of Hurley in 2018. “We went through terrible years in the beginning when neither of us had a job, we lived in a small apartment. It was quite bonding.”
