I opened up to my mother-in-law in more ways than one

DEAR DEIDRE: Men joke about their mothers-in-law, but I cheat on my wife with mine.

I know it’s wrong and yet I can’t stop.

I am 44 years old, and my wife is 36 years old. My mother-in-law is 57 years old.

When I first met my wife, 15 years ago, I told a friend that I was lucky.

They say if you want to know what your partner will look like when she’s older, look at her mother – and hers was stunning.

But then I was madly in love – and lusted – for my wife.

I would see my mother-in-law at family gatherings. I made her laugh.

But my wife did not get along well with her.

Fast forward 15 years and my wife and I now have two teenage children and have fallen out of love.

We rarely have sex and fight all the time.

Last month, my mother-in-law, who is now a widow, came.

I work from home, so we talked a lot.

When my wife went to bed early, we had a few drinks together. She said she noticed we didn’t look so happy and asked if she could help.

I opened it and, to my surprise, she said she always thought I was too good for my wife. She said she would treat me much better if I were her husband.

Somehow the hug turned into a kiss, which turned into a passionate mess on the sofa.

We pulled away but the next night it happened again and this time we had full on sex on the living room floor.

It was such a horrible thing to do, it made her all the more exciting.

Since then we have sex every day while my wife is at work and the children are at school.

She’s going home soon and even though I feel guilty, I don’t want to end this affair.

DEIDRE SAYS: If you’re looking for permission to move on, you won’t find it here.

This isn’t just cheating on your wife, it’s a double betrayal.

They may not agree, but your mother-in-law is still her mother. If she finds out, she will be beyond devastated.

It will tear the family apart.

You have to put an end to this. If you are in an unhappy marriage, talk to your wife and work on your marriage or decide to separate.

My support package, Caring for Your Relationship, should help.
