Posh and Becks. They are up there with some of the most famous power celebrity couples. From their unforgettable matchy-matchy outfits to their meteoric rise to global stardom, this duo is a force to be reckoned with.
But it wasn’t always golden for VB and her husband David. While the duo are now big on glitter, the origins of ‘Posh and Becks’ are decidedly more humble.

Their upcoming Netflix docu-series explores their love story, paparazzi encounters and their many challenges in the spotlight.
As the synopsis aptly states: “From his humble working-class beginnings in East London, his desire and determination to win, and his struggle to find a balance between ambition, love and family, David’s story is one of enormous ups and downs.”

The series promises to take viewers on a rollercoaster ride as it “builds a surprising, personal and definitive story about one of the most recognizable and questionable athletes of all time.”

The burning question on everyone’s lips. Is it actually good?
I had the privilege of watching the first episodes with the Beckham family at the Curzon Mayfair before the official release on October 4th. Keep reading for my honest review…

As someone who writes about the Beckhams fairly regularly, I didn’t expect to be able to glean any new tidbits of information. The couple is still in the limelight thanks in part to David’s success with Inter Miami CF and VB’s hugely influential fashion brand… and on top of that, the entire Beckham clan is big on social media. In short, it’s damn easy to keep up with the Beckhams.
And yet, I must admit, I left the movie theater having learned something new. David and VB shared their first kiss in the parking lot?! Who would have thought? And VB casually admitted that “then she was not for football, [and isn’t] now to football.” I agree with you on that one, Victoria.

The first episode begins [pun absolutely intended] with the former professional footballer tending to his beloved bees while dressed in a full beekeeping suit. Keep your eyes peeled for the embroidered ‘DB’ initials in gold stitching.
“There’s a bit of a row in the house at the moment. I think it should be ‘Golden Bees’,” reveals David, before adding: “Victoria likes ‘DB’s Sticky Stuff’.”
After a quick giggle, we are catapulted into David’s early football career. We witness his sensational half-way goal that eventually catapulted him into the limelight and paved the way for his illustrious sports career.

In addition to stunning never-before-seen footage, the Beckham docu-series comes to life thanks to the addition of a few familiar faces.
To name a few, we meet David’s parents Ted and Sandra, Alex Ferguson, Eric Catona, Gary Neville, Mel C, Anna Wintour, Rio Ferdinand and Paul Ince. They offer candid insights into David and Victoria’s life away from the spotlight and add some humor.
Switching to VB. It was refreshing to see the fashion mogul let her down and dive into her childhood. Although she is known for her ‘no smile’ rule, the mother of four came across as more relatable than you might think.

Speaking about her struggles in the limelight, she reveals, “It was never easy for me like other girls… to be so open.
“I’ve always been quite shy. I was never the popular kid at school. I was actually bullied a lot. And I probably still would be if I hadn’t met girls. And what the Spice Girls did was bring me out of me.”
The second episode takes a closer look at David’s mental health issues after the ’98 World Cup. We get a real sense of what he had to deal with – and frankly, at a time when mental health wasn’t a priority in the workplace, I was blown away by his seemingly tough disposition and dogged determination.

We got a glimpse into their experience as first-time parents, with never-before-seen footage of their extravagant wedding in Ireland. Even VB was left speechless by the wonderfully wacky purple wedding dress…
David describes his documentary as “a love letter to football and his family”. And it certainly delivers results on all fronts.
Bad side’s? It would be nice to see a few more views inside their house. Although the green velvet setting is visually very aesthetic, I would have liked to see a few more clips of their unfiltered and unpolished family life. Plus, it’s pretty heavy on football… so if you’re not even remotely interested in sports, then this one might not be for you.
