Incredible optical illusion is NOT what it seems – can you work it out?

THIS incredible optical illusion will trick your brain into seeing color, but it’s not what it seems.

The stunning image, first shared by London-based digital artist Stuart Humphryes, tricks your brain into seeing color when it’s not there.

Can you see what is happening in this illusion?

The image shows what is called the “color assimilation network illusion”, and here we explain why.

In the frame, the teenagers’ shirts are green, blue, yellow, or red, and the tree behind them is green.

However, if you look closely, you can see that the image is actually a grayscale with no color in the clothing or the surrounding nature.

This is because the artist simply added a grid of colored lines on top of the black and white image.

Stuart then explained how our brain “fills in the gap” in color perception and applies the color from the grid to the entire image.

He said: “This is fascinating and shows how weak the color information in a photo can be for the brain to fill in the gaps and ‘color’ it for you.

“It’s a black and white photograph, but superimposed with a thin grid of colored lines. They are enough to trick your mind into seeing the picture in full color.”

The image recently resurfaced online on Twitter via art lover Daniel Holland, who joked that the illusion “broke his head off.”

Confused users in the comments fully agreed, with one labeling it “outstanding.”

Another added: “It’s amazing and weird.”

Vision scientist Bart Anderson from the University of Sydney previously explained the phenomenon for Science Alert 2019.

He said: “The color system is what vision scientists call ‘low pass’, meaning many receptive fields that code for color are quite large.

“Thus, the gratings are ‘interlaced’ with the achromatic background, which is then assigned to that part of the image.”

Previously, people were stunned by a visual trick that turned a black-and-white photo into a color representation of a joyous campus scene.

While other users online went crazy for the clever optical illusion, but can you tell who is wearing heels?
