Indi Gregory dead: Critically ill baby dies in her mum’s arms after life support switched off following legal battle

A CRITICALLY ill baby has tragically died after being taken off life support despite her parents’ desperate fight.

Eight-month-old Indi Gregory had mitochondrial disease, an incurable condition that drains energy from the body’s cells.

The tragic baby girl also had a hole in her heart and underwent bowel and skull surgery shortly after her birth in February.

Indi died overnight in a hospice after her life-sustaining treatment was withdrawn following a Supreme Court ruling.

Her mother Claire Staniforth held the boy as she died.

She and Dean Gregory launched a huge legal battle to keep their daughter alive as they vowed to fight to the end.

At one point they even planned to move to Italy for treatment in a last ditch effort to save her.

But they lost the fight at every obstacle, and the judges ultimately ruled that keeping Inda involved was not in her “best interests.”

Dean said: “India’s life ended at 01.45am. Claire and I are angry, heartbroken and ashamed. The NHS and the courts have not only taken away her chance to live a longer life, they have also taken away Indi’s dignity to die in her family’s home where belonged.

“They managed to take Indi’s body and dignity, but they can never take her soul. They tried to get rid of Indi without anyone knowing, but we made sure she was remembered forever. I knew she was special from the day she was born.

“Claire held her for her last breath.”

Dean and Claire argued in the High Court that their daughter had “proved everyone wrong” and that she “needs more time”.

But hospital bosses begged judges to rule they could legally limit treatment because keeping a “dying” baby on a ventilator would “prolong things”.

The judge “with a heavy heart” concluded that medics can withdraw “invasive treatment”.

He said the devotion shown by Inda’s family was “palpable” and their pain “almost unimaginable”, but the medical evidence was “unanimous and clear”.

In the latest major blow to her parents, a judge rejected their pleas to let Indi die at home rather than at the Queen’s Medical Center in Nottingham or a hospice.

He echoed the concerns of the health trust responsible for Inda’s care, which said it would be “too dangerous” to move her treatment elsewhere.

Indi suffered from the same condition as Charlie Gard, who died in 2017 after his parents lost a court battle to extend his treatment.

A defiant Dean previously told how his daughter was a “real fighter” who deserved a chance at life.

He added: “Look, if we thought Indi was brainless we’d be absolutely devastated, but we wouldn’t agree with the doctors.

“But our daughter responds to us, and on her good days she babbles, makes sounds, moves all her limbs. She can definitely experience happiness.”
