Indira Banerjee is a judge of the Supreme Court of India. In the history of India, she is the eighth female judge of the Supreme Court of India. She was the second woman to be appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court in 2017-18.

She was admitted as a lawyer on July 5, 1985 and started practicing before the Calcutta High Court. She practiced law (except criminal law) in all divisions of the Original and Appellate Divisions of the Calcutta High Court. On February 5, 2002, she was appointed as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court. While serving in the Calcutta High Court, she also served as the Chairman, Calcutta High Court Service Commission for four years. She has been appointed as the Executive Chairman, West Bengal Legal Services Authority for a period of one year. In July 2013, she was nominated to receive a seven-day judicial management training at the Singapore Civil Service College. She was nominated for this training by the then Chief Justice of India. On August 8, 2016, she was transferred to the Delhi High Court. While serving in the Delhi High Court, she was appointed as the Chairman, Delhi State Legal Services Authority. On April 5, 2017, she became the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, succeeding Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, who was appointed to the Supreme Court of India. Indira Banerjee is the second woman to serve as the President of the Madras High Court after Justice Kanta Kumari Bhatnagar.

In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 124(2) of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Justice Indira Banerjee, Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Kumari, to the Supreme Court of India for the first time since her Effective from the date of inauguration. “

On August 7, 2018, Indira Banerjee was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India until her retirement on September 24, 2022. She is one of the four women judges of the Supreme Court, including Justice BV Nagarathna, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Bela M Trivedi. On September 1, 2021, nine justices in the history of the Supreme Court were sworn in in one day. The names of these judges are Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Justice Hima Kohli, Justice BV Nagarathna, Justice CT Ravikumar, Justice MM Sundresh, Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice PS Narasimha.
