Inside Liam Payne's Final Days: Watching His One Direction Bandmate Perform and Vacationing in Argentina

In the hours leading up to his death on October 16, Liam Payne took to Snapchat to share the highlights of his vacation in Buenos Aires. Less than an hour after he posted his last picture, reports surfaced that he had died after falling from a balcony, which PEOPLE confirmed. Payne was 31 years old.

Payne has been in Argentina since at least early October, when he attended a concert by his former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan in the capital.

In Snapchat pictures shared on October 16, a smiling Payne, who also recently signed on for a new Netflix project, appeared in good spirits and excited about the future. In one photo, he slumped into a chair and wrote that he was thinking of dressing up as Forrest Gump for Halloween this year. He also expressed his gratitude for the trip by posting a photo of the scenery and writing, “I’m happy to have some time [red heart emoji].”

His last photo was a shirtless mirror selfie with girlfriend Kate Cassidy that was actually taken a year earlier, not from their vacation in Argentina.

In a clip shared on X (formerly Twitter), he suggested he and Horan, 31, would chat after the show. “I think we could just go and say goodbye. It’s been a while since Niall and I talked. We have a lot to talk about. And I’d like to arrange a few things with the boy. No bad vibes or anything like that. But just hmmwe need to talk.”

The former bandmates were able to reunite at Horan’s concert via photos on Payne’s Snapchat.

Payne’s trip follows news that he is set to team up with Nicole Scherzinger, Kelly Rowland and AJ McLean for the Netflix music competition series Building a band. He and Rowland were to be judges, while McLean was appointed as host. Scherzinger will be a mentor and judge on the series, which follows individual singers as they try to form the next biggest band without ever seeing each other.

PEOPLE has reached out to Netflix to ask about the future of the show following Payne’s death.

The singer’s personal life was also at the fore during his final days. In May, his ex-fiancée Maya Henry opened up to PEOPLE about her memories of their relationship and her “painful” miscarriage.

Speaking of her novel I look forward to which is inspired by the true events of her life and involves protagonist Mallory suffering a miscarriage, Henry told PEOPLE about her own miscarriage: “If it were up to me, I wouldn’t have done it. But also, if I had made a different decision, then I would have lost the person I loved. There were certainly difficult conversations about that. But looking back now, things happen for a reason.”

Henry’s fictional book, which follows the relationship between young model Mallory and a British pop star, contained sensitive material such as abortion, abuse, violence, self-harm, substance abuse and eating disorders. While Henry told PEOPLE that “the book is obviously fiction,” she said she “got inspired [from my real life].”

Liam Payne regrets speaking negatively about his One Direction bandmates, but calls the band ‘a bit toxic’

Just a week before Payne’s death, Henry allegedly issued a cease and desist order to Payne after she alleged he had repeatedly contacted her, according to Daily Mail. Henry’s attorney did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

“Since we broke up, he’s been texting me, blowing up my phone… always from different phone numbers,” Henry said on TikTok of Payne, who she didn’t name but linked to “One Direction fans.”

“He will create new iCloud accounts to send me messages,” she claimed.

A source familiar with the situation tells PEOPLE that Payne “has been extremely overwhelmed with all the legal issues” involving his ex.

Payne died after falling from several floors at the CasaSur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires. Policía Federal Argentina confirmed the news to PEOPLE. Local police are investigating the cause of his death and an autopsy will be performed. He left behind a son Bear Gray (7), whom he shares with his ex-partner, singer Cheryl.

Argentine news channel TN was the first to report the news.
