Inside the Moment Kyle Richards Found Out Her Separation News Broke: I Saw ‘Her Face Shift,’ Says Daughter

THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR BUYING BEVERLY HILLS SEASON 2.

The news of Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky’s divorce made waves when it broke last July. Now fans are getting an inside look at the moment Richards found out the couple’s relationship status was public.

In the second season of Mauricio’s Netflix show, Buying Beverly Hillsthe couple’s daughter, Alexia Umansky, reveals she witnessed the moment her mom first saw the news on People.com.

In episode 7 of the new season, which aired Friday, Alexia says she and her mom paddleboarded during a family trip to their Colorado vacation home.

“The first time I found out about the article, we were on a stand-up paddleboarding trip with my family in Aspen,” Alexia recalls in a confessional on-camera interview. “And I see my mom looking at her phone, and I see her face change. And I see my dad walk out, and he just had, phone call, text message, phone call, text message.”

Although the cameras did not appear to be on at the time, the show captured the aftermath. The scene cuts to the couple’s three oldest daughters, Alexia, Sophia and Farrah, discussing the news at the Aspen house.

“They’re not separated. Or, as far as I know, they’re not separated,” says Sophia.

But Farrah is quick to correct: “What makes it different this time is that there’s actually some truth to what’s being said.” She adds, “We don’t really talk about the hard stuff.”

Richards and Mauricio’s communication with the girls – or perceived lack thereof – regarding the separation is a point of tension throughout the season.

“Before the news came out, we really didn’t talk about the problems with the family. We kind of kept it a secret. Not a secret, but away from the kids,” says Mauricio in a taped confessional. “I can’t imagine a moment where you think your parents are divorcing, separating, and you hear it from someone else.”

Richards admits to Mauricio that she’s already told their girls “some of the stuff” that’s going on between them, adding: “Not only that, but people can sense when there’s no energy. Our girls are smart. And it’s our shame that we didn’t say anything sooner as it should be. Because then they feel like we’re hiding something, maybe.”

A source close to the couple confirmed to PEOPLE last summer, “Kyle and Mauricio have been separated for some time, but they still live under the same roof. They remain friendly while they figure out what’s next for them and their family.”

Meanwhile, Mauricio publicly confirmed the news and the new season Buying Beverly Hills documents the changes in the couple’s relationship over six months, with both parties finally accepting that they will explore what life looks like without the other.

At an emotional dinner with the girls that apparently took place at the very end of the filming of the second season, Mauricio tells them: “You know, your mom came, she talked to me and she said that I think I need space. She said for me, listen, the rules to go out, go out, do whatever you want. I’m not going to ask you what you’re doing. I don’t want you to ask what I’m doing. Like, we’re separated.”

He continues, adding that despite not having “any conversations” with Richards “in the last two months,” he’s meeting her after dinner to sort things out.

“My intention is to let her know where my head is. Today, where I stand is… I want space,” he says. “I don’t know where she is today. Where she was six weeks ago, I am today.”

Season 2 of Buying Beverly Hills is now streaming on Netflix.
