Jessica Rose Phillips, born on October 9, 1981 in Birmingham, West Midlands, is the youngest of four children. Her parents, Stewart Trainor and Jean Trainor (née Mackay), were politically active and her mother held senior positions in the NHS. Phillips attended King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls, where she developed ambitions to become prime minister.
She continued her higher education at the University of Leeds, studying economic and social history and social policy. Phillips actively protested the war in Iraq and later completed a postgraduate degree in public sector management at the University of Birmingham.
During her early career, Phillips worked for her parents’ company, Healthlinks Event Management Services. In 2010 she joined the Women’s Aid Federation of England as Business Development Manager, focusing on the management of domestic violence shelters in the West Midlands.
Phillips temporarily left the Labor Party during Tony Blair’s leadership, but returned after the 2010 general election. Her time at Women’s Aid forced her to pragmatically put people’s lives before her principles. In the 2012 local elections, she was elected as a Labor councilor for the Longbridge district.
