Is Robin Wright’s Forrest Gump Character ‘Anti-Feminist’? Actress Responds to Criticism: 'She Was Kind of Selfish'

While Wright, 58, and her co-star Tom Hanks spoke with The New York Times about their new movie Here in an interview published on Friday, November 1, the actress was asked to comment on the notion that she played “some kind of anti-feminist role” in the film.

“No! It’s not about that. People have said she’s Voldemort to Forrest. I wouldn’t pick that as a reference, but she was a bit selfish,” Wright said. IN Forrest GumpWright portrays Jenny, the title character’s childhood friend with whom he has a crush throughout the film. Forrest Gump follows the lives of the characters over many decades. Their paths cross several times as adults, eventually welcoming a child together before Jenny becomes terminally ill.

“I don’t think it’s a punishment that she got AIDS. She was so promiscuous – it was selfishness that she did to Forrest,” added Wright. “He was in love with her from day one. And she was just high-spirited and running around and doing cocaine and hooking up with the Black Panther. And then she gets sick and says, ‘This is your child. But I’m dying.’

“And he still leads her, ‘I’ll take care of you at my mom’s house,'” Wright recalled. The film ends with Forrest taking care of Jenny until she dies and taking their son to his first day of school. – I mean, it’s the sweetest love story.

Forrest Gump is considered one of the best films of the 20th century. It won six Academy Awards at the 67th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Hanks’ Best Actor win.

“It’s a movie that I’ll always be sentimental about, not just because it’s a great movie,” Wright told times of the film in the second place in the interview. “Sentimental to work with these guys because it was such a great experience.”
