Who is Serena Williams?
Serena Jameka Williams is a former professional tennis player from the United States. She was born on September 26, 1981. Many consider her one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Serena has held the number one spot in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) world singles rankings for a total of 319 weeks, including a record 186 consecutive weeks.
Five times she finished as the first player at the end of the year. With 23 Grand Slam women’s singles titles, she holds the record for the most in the Open Era and is second on the all-time list. Serena is also the only player to win the Golden Slam in her career in both singles and doubles.
Serena and her older sister Venus were coached by their parents, Oracene Price and Richard Williams. Serena turned professional in 1995 and won her first major singles title at the US Open in 1999. From the 2002 French Open to the 2003 Australian Open, she had a dominant run, winning all four major singles titles in succession (defeating Venus in the final each time ) to complete a non-calendar year Grand Slam and a career Grand Slam, also known as the ‘Serena Slam’.
In the following years, she won two more singles tournaments, but faced injuries and a decline in form. However, starting in 2007, Serena gradually returned to form, regaining the top spot in the world rankings. From the 2012 Wimbledon Championships onwards, she enjoyed a period of dominance, winning Olympic gold (completing a career Golden Slam singles) and eight out of thirteen singles tournaments, including four consecutive titles from 2014 to 2015, achieving second “Serena Slam”.
At the 2017 Australian Open, she won her 23rd major singles title, surpassing Steffi Graf’s Open Era record. Serena took a break from professional tennis after becoming pregnant and reached four major finals upon her return. In August 2022, she announced her upcoming “evolution” from professional tennis and played her anticipated final match at the 2022 US Open.
In addition to her singles success, Serena also won 14 major women’s doubles titles, all with her sister Venus. The Williams sisters had an unbeaten record in major doubles finals, making them the most successful duo in major finals in any sport. They achieved a Grand Slam outside of the calendar year between the 2009 Wimbledon Championships and the 2010 French Open, which earned them the number one spot in the world doubles rankings.
Serena won four Olympic gold medals, three in women’s doubles (joint record) and one in singles. She and Venus are the only women in the Open era to win Olympic gold in singles and doubles. Serena also won two major mixed doubles titles, both in 1998. She is the only player, male or female, to win three career Golden Slams: one in women’s singles and two in same-sex doubles.
The arrival of the Williams sisters is credited with ushering in a new era of strength and athleticism in women’s professional tennis. Serena has a total of 39 major titles: 23 in singles, 14 in women’s doubles and two in mixed doubles. She is tied for third on the all-time list and second in the Open Era for all major titles.
Serena is the last woman to hold all four major singles titles simultaneously (2002–2003 and 2014–2015) and the last woman to win a Surface Slam (winning the majors on hard, clay and grass in the same calendar year, realized in 2015). Along with Venus, she is the most recent player to hold all four major women’s doubles titles simultaneously (2009–2010).
In terms of earnings, Serena was the highest paid female athlete in 2016, earning nearly $29 million. She repeated that feat in 2017 when she was the only woman on Forbes’ list of the 100 highest paid female athletes, with $27 million in awards and endorsements.
Serena has won the Laureus Sportswoman of the Year Award a record four times (2003, 2010, 2016 and 2018) and was named Sports Illustrated Sportswoman of the Year in December 2015. She is the highest-paid female athlete of all time.

Husband of Serena Williams
Alexis Kerry Ohanian is the husband of Serena Williams. He is an American entrepreneur and investor, known for co-founding Reddit and serving as its executive chairman. He has also been involved in ventures such as Initialized Capital, Hipmunk and Breadpig. Ohanian has gained recognition in the technology industry and was named to Forbes’ “30 Under 30” list in 2011 and 2012.
In 2012, Forbes named him the “Mayor of the Internet,” and in 2013, Wired’s 20th anniversary issue highlighted him as a champion of innovation. In 2015, Crain’s named him to its “40 Under 40” list for business, and he was recognized as one of Fast Company’s “Most Creative People in Business” in 2016.
As for his personal life, Alexis Ohanian is married to professional tennis player Serena Williams. They met for the first time in May 2015 at the Rome Cavalieri Hotel, where they were both staying. Ohanian was sitting next to Williams at the table, and she invited him to the French Open. Surprisingly, he flew to Paris to watch her play. They spent hours together, walking around the city and getting to know each other, which eventually led to their love. Before he met Serena, Alexis was not a tennis fan.
Despite being a Jehovah’s Witness and not normally celebrating birthdays, Serena made an exception and celebrated Alexis’ 33rd birthday with a FaceTime call. In December 2016, Ohanian proposed to Serena at the same hotel where they first met, creating a romantic setting with a table for two and a pool covered in roses.
Two months after welcoming their daughter in September, the couple tied the knot in New Orleans. Serena looked stunning in a Sarah Burton by Alexander McQueen ball gown as she walked down the aisle.

Serena Williams Child
Shortly after the engagement, Serena discovered she was pregnant. Just a month after Alexis Ohanian proposed, the couple received good news. On September 1, 2017, they welcomed their daughter into the world, naming her Alexis Olympia Ohanian.
The choice of name was a tribute to her father, Alexis, who continued his legacy. In addition, their daughter’s initials, AO, have special significance. They represent Serena’s remarkable achievement of winning the Australian Open in 2017 while pregnant with Olympia. The couple celebrated both the beginning of their parenting journey and Serena’s incredible sporting achievement with their daughter’s name.
As proof of their love for their child, Serena and Alexis opened a joint Instagram account dedicated to recording and sharing the precious moments of Olympia’s life. This platform allows them to document and cherish milestones, joys and memories as their daughter grows. It serves as a digital scrapbook, celebrating the beautiful bond between a parent and their child while providing insight into the loving family dynamic that Serena and Alexis have created.
