When most people think of Superman, they usually think of a muscular guy with broad shoulders who can literally lift a car and move a building.
This perception made Jack Quaid think twice before accepting the job of voicing Superman My adventures with Superman.
“I remember coming into the audition and my first thought was sarcastically like, ‘Oh yeah, I’m going to be Superman,’” Quaid, 31, told PEOPLE on Wednesday at SCAD TVFest 2024 in Atlanta. “But to contribute to it was such an honor that I never thought I’d ever get the chance to play because I know I don’t look the part.”

Quaid credited the “power of animation” with being able to change the way viewers see superheroes.
“After seeing what they did with the character and how Clark he is [Kent] first, second Superman — no second, it’s just Superman is the identity he pretends to be, and deep down he’s Clark — I like that story about that,” he said.
Star of Boys he also likes that animation gives him the freedom to show up in lounges at work.
“You can look like hell and have a great day,” Quaid joked. “I love the freedom it gives you. I love being able to play in this world, play a role I never thought I’d play in a million years. It feels like you can go even deeper into a character in a lot of ways.”

Still, Quaid sometimes feels uncomfortable voicing Superman.
“It was very strange to play Superman because saying the words ‘I am Superman’ is really strange,” he said. “It’s impossible to say it without seeming like a weird inflection. But the fact that I got to play this character is such an honor.”
If Quaid could choose one superpower, he would borrow it from Superman.
“This is going to be the most boring answer of all time: It’s flight,” Quaid said of his dream power. “And I say that anyone who says anything different is lying! You fly. I know that’s a pretty simple answer, but I might like to talk to the animals just to see what they think. I will fly from port to port just talking to some creatures.”

But Quaid believes talking to animals would “probably get old real quick.”
“They’d probably just say, ‘Where’s the food?'” Quaid speculated.

And if Superman could lend his powers to us here on earth, Quaid knows what he’d want the hero to tackle first.
“Climate change,” Quaid said. “Superman, please just use your ice breath on the polarized cap for a bit and we’ll figure it out.”
