Jack Schlossberg shares his thoughts on Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s clothing auction.
On Wednesday, December 4, Schlossberg, 31, responded to a Today segment of the show discussing Sotheby’s second annual auction of fashion icons, which includes three items of clothing that belonged to his late aunt, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.
Auction items include 2 black wool coats with a starting bid of $15,000 each and a faux leopard print coat with a starting bid of $20,000.
“Super creepy if you ask me,” Schlossberg wrote on his Instagram Stories alongside a photo of the segment playing on a TV screen. “Call me to talk real issues with @savannahguthrie.”
Schlossberg marked both Today and anchor Guthrie in another post that reads, “I think you should be interviewing young people (me) instead of a dress you found somewhere to make $$ off someone’s death.”
Today and Sotheby’s declined PEOPLE’s request for comment on Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Bessette-Kennedy, Schlossberg’s married aunt, died in a plane crash on July 16, 1999, aged 33. Her sister Lauren Bessette (34) and husband John F. Kennedy Jr. (38) also died in the accident. The plane was piloted by Kennedy, and in 2000 the National Transportation Safety Board said in a report that the crash was caused by “pilot error” due to “spatial disorientation.”
The auction is far from the first auction of items from a famous family. In 1996, Jack’s mother Caroline Kennedy and his uncle John F. Kennedy Jr. they partnered with Sotheby’s for a successful auction of items from the estate of their mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, which raised over $34 million.
Schlossberg’s father is artist/author Edwin Schlossberg.
In the years since her death, Bessette-Kennedy, a former fashion publicist, has been cemented in history as a style icon. Her effortless chic style shaped the trends of the 1990s and continues to influence fashion today.

A press release from Sotheby’s calls Bessette-Kennedy “an irreplaceable figure, captivating the world with her timeless elegance, minimalist style and what is now known as ‘quiet luxury’.” The three items of clothing featured in the auction were given to her by her friend RoseMarie Terenzio, who was also Kennedy’s executive assistant.
“There is no better expression of a person’s life than their clothes,” says Sotheby’s fashion expert Lucy Bishop via press release. “Countless articles have been written about Carolyn’s life and era-defining minimalist style, but relatively little is known about her in the public eye. This outfit speaks volumes about her tragically short but remarkable life.”
The auction opened for online bidding on November 27 and will close on December 17 with the garments on display at Sotheby’s New York from December 5-10.
