The blame game with Mamata Banerjee

Ever since Jagdeep Dhankar was appointed governor of West Bengal, he and Mamata Banerjee have often had heated exchanges. In January 2022, Mamata Banerjee blocked Jagdeep Dhankhar on Twitter. Mamata said in an interview,

I was forced to block Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Twitter. He (the governor) tweets daily targeting and threatening government officials as if we are his bonded laborers. ”

Probe into West Bengal Deputy Prime Minister

In July 2020, when the vice president of a state university failed to attend a meeting at the governor’s mansion, the governor launched an investigation into the vice president. Seeking clarification on the issue, the governor wrote a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Mamata said in an interview,

Despite being elected representatives, (the governor) expects us to behave like servants…and must answer (him) every moment. We are in regular contact with the governor – I spoke to him four times on Wednesday. What will the (state) government do: respond to the outbreak or continue to answer his inquiries? Enough is enough. “

Refuting Mamata’s accusations, Jagdeep Dhankar said the Mamata-led state government was toying with state education matters by creating an “unhealthy situation” that made it difficult for educational institutions to function. He said in an interview,

Education is the soul of a society and is passed down from generation to generation. Unfortunately, in our country, education is imprisoned and controlled by politics. Political control of education is tightening – to the detriment of students, the educational environment and society as a whole. ”

Make chief minister the ‘default’ chancellor of state universities

According to the Indian Constitution, the state governor also serves as the chancellor of the national university. In July 2022, the West Bengal Legislative Assembly passed a bill to appoint the chief minister instead of the governor as chancellor of state universities. The bill also empowers the chief minister to appoint vice-chancellors of universities. Jagdeep Dhankar alleged that Mamata Banerjee was trying to divert the attention of the Calcutta High Court from the discrepancies found in the appointment of new teachers in national universities, which was also pointed out by the Calcutta High Court itself. After the bill was passed by the Legislative Assembly, the governor appointed Mahua Mukherjee as the vice-chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University (RBU) in July 2022. The West Bengal government considers the governor’s decision to be undemocratic and illegal. The state government in its official statement said,

The governor has once again proven that he does not believe in democratic principles and federalism.
