Jalen began his college career as a true freshman in 2013, appearing in all 14 games for the Florida State Seminoles. He wore No. 13 his freshman year, but switched to No. 8 his junior and sophomore years. As a result of his outstanding performance, he was named a consensus All-American in 2015.
In 2016, he decided to forgo his senior year and enter the NFL draft instead. He competed in track and field at Florida State as a sprinter and long jumper. He was as talented in athletics as he was in football. In 2013, Jalen was named All-ACC three times. He qualified for the NCAA East preliminary meet in the long jump.
