James Marsden Says Favorite Holiday Tradition is to ‘Stay Home’ and ‘Get All My Kids Together’ (Exclusive)

James Marsden enjoys precious time with his family.

The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 star, 50, spoke with PEOPLE at the 2024 Spirit Awards Nominees Brunch in Santa Monica on Saturday, where he described his favorite part of the recent holiday season: staying home.

“I’ve traveled a lot and it’s always great and I love what I do and I have to move around quite a bit, but there’s something about just feeling like you’re at home and doing those Christmas traditions that we do with my kids, getting all my kids together and everything and just be at home,” he says.

“I know it sounds like the most obvious thing, but boy.”

James Marsden’s Three Children: All About Jack, Mary and William

Marsden is the father of three children: Jack, Mary and William. He shares 22-year-old Jack and 18-year-old Mary with ex-wife Lisa Linde, while he shares William (11) with ex-girlfriend Rose Costa.

As for whether he and his kids have a favorite holiday tradition, Marsden reveals they have a few.

“We leave out the cookies,” he says, adding, “We [also] leave the carrot for the reindeer. Of course, my kids are getting a little old. But it’s nice to see my oldest son, who is about to turn 23, start to embrace that tradition and do it for my youngest son.”

And it’s not just treats for Santa on Christmas Eve, the actor and his family also enjoy the fun.

“So yeah, we sing with hot chocolate and open a present the night before,” says Marsden.

The actor is having a busy awards season after slowing down over the holidays. He is nominated for best actor in a supporting role in a television role at the Golden Globes on Sunday, while his series, Jury dutywon the award for best television series — musical or comedy.

Last month, Marsden took to Instagram to react to the nominations, writing that he was “still up in the air” after hearing the news.

“Amazing company. So honored to be involved. @jurydutycomedytvshow just keeps on going,” he wrote.

The actor celebrated his 50th birthday in September. To celebrate, he was joined by several friends at a star-studded party thrown by Casamigos, which featured a cheeky shirtless photo of himself printed on a cake.
