Jamie Foxx Remembers His Late Sister DeOndra Dixon on her 39th Birthday: ‘I Wish You Were Here’

Jamie Foxx posted a touching tribute to his late sister DeOndra Dixon, who would have turned 39 on Wednesday.

“Miss me… I wish you were here, I know you’re in heaven, cracking everyone up with your jokes,” Child driver the actor posted on Instagram, along with a photo of the two siblings smiling and gently resting their heads on each other.

The 55-year-old also shared a clip on his Instagram Stories, taken from inside a Rolls-Royce as it pulled up in front of a large blue and pink decorative display set around the entrance fountain of an undisclosed mansion.

The display read “Fly High Butterfly DeOndra” in large letters and was surrounded by cardboard cutouts of gifts, balloons, hearts and stars, plus smaller signs that read “family” and “we miss you.”

“I wish you were here,” Fox posted on Instagram in tribute to her younger sister DeOndra Dixon, who would have been 39 today.

Over the clip, Foxx wrote the words “I miss you” in reference to his younger sister Dixon, who died on Monday, October 19, 2020, at the age of 36.

When he first broke the news of his sister’s death in 2020, Foxx said that to him, “she will always be alive.”

“My heart is broken into a million pieces… my beautiful beloved sister Deondra has changed,” Foxx posted on Instagram alongside a black-and-white photo of the siblings. “I say in transition because she will always be alive…anyone who knew my sister…knew she was a bright light…”

Foxx also shared on Instagram Stories a video of what appeared to be a party held in Dixon’s honor.

“I know she is in heaven now dancing with her wings…even though my pain is unbelievable, I smile when I think of all the great memories she left me…my family…and her friends…from dancing in blame it video… to Dancing at the Grammys… And becoming an ambassador for @globaldownsyndrome… from sliding down the stairs with a smile as wide as the Rio Grand… to serenading her with all her music… ,” Foxx continued, previously but added, “Our family is broken but we will put the pieces back together with your love… and please pray for my family… 💔💔💔.”

Dixon, who was born on September 6, 1984 in Dallas, Texas, was named a 2011 ambassador for the Global Down Syndrome Foundation.

With the support of her close family, she began participating in the Special Olympics when she was in 6th grade, competing for over nine years.

In her biography on the foundation’s website, Dixon said she was “born to dance,” writing, “I want to be a professional dancer.”

“My brother has given me the opportunity to do some special things,” Dixon wrote. “I danced in his music video “Blame It”. I danced on stage at some of his concerts around the country. And guess what? I danced at the Grammys!”

For Foxx, it was love at first sight when he held baby DeOndra, whose parents are Foxx’s mother Louise Annette Dixon and his stepfather George Dixon, for the first time at the age of 16.

“We weren’t tripping over the fact that she has Down syndrome,” he told PEOPLE in November 2011. “We were tripping over the fact that she’s cute.”

“One thing people may not understand is that a person with special needs, the love they give you is unfiltered,” the actor said at the time. “There’s nothing in the way of them loving you and there’s nothing in the way of them being mad at you.”

Dixon told PEOPLE she’s “happy to have an older brother she can count on,” adding that she loves him “every day.”
