Javed Akhtar is an Indian poet, lyricist and screenwriter. He is one of the most successful screenwriters in Bollywood and is considered one of the screenwriters who achieved stardom in India.

Javed Akhtar started his career as a screenwriter in the film Andaz (1971) with Salim Khan.
Javed and Salim Khan co-starred in films from 1971 to 1981. The duo created films like “Zanjeer” (1973), “Deewaar” (1975), “Sholay” (1975), “Don” (1978), “Dostana” (1980) and “Kranti” (1981). In 1982, the two broke up due to ego issues. In 1983, Javid made his debut as an independent screenwriter with the film Betaab (1983).
He made his debut as a lyricist with the film Silsila (1981).

- In the trailer of the film “PM Narendra Modi”, Javed Akhtar’s name appears in the end credits, he composed the song “Ishwar-Allah” (originally taken from the film “1947-Earth”) lyrics. The song is an exact replica of the original with only minor changes. However, Javed Akhtar took to his Twitter account to deny any contribution to the lyrics. However, film producer Sandeep Singh clarified that the lyrics of the original song used in the film were written by Javed Akhtar; that’s why Javed appears in the film.

- Javed had issued a court notice to singer Amaal Malik and T-Series for not giving due credit to the original writer of the famous 90s song “Ghar Se Nikalte Hi”. The authors criticized them for considering “Kunal Vermaa” as the lyricist. Except for the melody, the lyrics of the song were changed. Javed issued a notice claiming a staggering amount of money being claimed. The recipient donated Rs 10 crore and requested that the name of the original creator of the song be included.
- Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan approached the Bombay High Court to file a case against the producers of the film Zanjeer (2013). The film is a remake of the 1973 film Zanjeer, written by Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan. They claimed that they retained the copyright to the “literary work” (i.e. the screenplay) and therefore the film required their permission.
- Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi faced backlash after they commented on the controversy surrounding the film Padmaavat (2018). The couple said in the interview,
Now this is the new Taliban and Taliban directives. This should be opposed…secular Hindus should speak out against it. These royals never fought against the British, why are they now on the streets protesting…I am willing to agree with any poor Rajput but not with these Rajput royals…”
- On February 1, 2021, he filed a criminal complaint against Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, following which the Mumbai Municipal Court issued a summons to her, asking her to appear in court on March 1, 2021. In his complaint, Mr. Akhtar claimed that Ms. Ranaut made defamatory remarks about him. In an interview on July 19, 2020, she compared Mr. Akhtar to actor Sushant Singh Rajput. linked to suicide.

- Javed was born a Muslim but calls himself an atheist and raised his son Farhan and daughter Zoya as atheists.
- Javed came to Bombay in 1964 hoping to make it big in Bollywood. He had no food to eat and no place to sleep. After spending the night under trees or in the corridors, he finally found shelter at Kamal Amrohi’s studio in Jogeshwari.
- Salim Khan and Javed first met on the sets of Sarhadi Lootera. Salim Khan is an actor and Javed is a Clapping boy. Later, Javed was promoted to dialogue writer.
- Salim Khan generates ideas and Javed structures conversations. Javed wrote the dialogues in Urdu and had an assistant translate them into Hindi.
