Jay Slater cops issue major Tenerife search update as they give family permission to deploy own teams to join hunt

SPANISH cops said Jay Slater’s family may hire their own search teams to find the missing teenager.

The Briton went missing on June 17, and last Sunday police called off their massive efforts to find him in the mountains of Tenerife.

Now, 18 days after he went missing, Spanish police have given the family permission to send their own rescue forces.

The family told Sky they hope to use some of the GoFundMe – now up to almost £50,000 – to fund a new search.

Jay’s last known location was in the Rural de Teno Park, near a 2,000-foot gorge with a sheer drop into the sea around the vacation island.

A massive search team made up of police, volunteers, firefighters, drones, helicopters and sniffer dogs spent two weeks scouring the rare nearby park.

On June 30, local authorities suspended the mammoth hunt, leaving Jay’s “furious” family to fend for themselves.

They vowed to continue searching for the teenager as his father and brother were seen hiking through the mountains.

The Guardia Civil told Sky that external search teams can visit the island “without problems” to help with the search.

All rescue teams would have to inform them of the plans to ensure “good management of information and resources”.

Spanish police officers said they had not yet received any requests.

Lancashire Police offered to fly to the island to help after Jay went missing – but were shot down by Tenerife officers.

Jay’s worried dad Warren told the Manchester Evening News that his son could have been heading towards the sea on the morning he went missing.

He said, “I’ve walked this path twice. Every step I took was an opening.

“If you land on one of those cacti, you don’t move. Surely someone will find you in two weeks.”

“It’s hundreds of square meters of this little bush. You can’t explain it to someone without seeing it. You can photograph it or record it, but until you get here . . .”

Warren told the MEN that he had turned from grief to anger at the police response to Jay’s disappearance.

He said: “I’ve been through a bit of grief and I’m angry, if that makes any sense.

“I’m mad that nothing happened. If I left you here and then you just disappeared, don’t you think the police would be on my case?”

Apprentice bricklayer Jay, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, was last heard from on the morning of June 17.

He phoned his friend Lucy to tell her he was “lost in the middle of nowhere” after returning to a remote Airbnb with two Brits the night before.

After missing the bus, he began walking the 11-hour route back to his accommodation and disappeared into the rural mountains.

On Monday, Jay’s parents asked police not to give up the search for their son during a crucial meeting.

Detectives promised to look into any new tips or information that comes in, but insisted on suspending the active search.

A source close to the family revealed that the decision to call off the search was a “nightmare scenario” that Jay’s family was “frightened of”.

Jay’s worried loved ones yesterday hit out at the TikTok creator who flew out to join the search but backed out after saying he “never had any money” from the GoFundMe.

Callum Fahim, who voluntarily traveled to Tenerife to help the officers, claims he left after being bombarded with death threats and not seeing any cash.

He flew in after contacting the 19-year-old’s mother, Debbie Duncan, via the Internet, reports Sky News.

But Fahim has now shared plans to return to the UK on Thursday.

The Slater family claim Debbie gave Callum £740 of her own money to fund his accommodation.

She says the TikToker became “bitter” after they refused to give him more money.

Several search experts and a former detective claimed the teenager could be alive somewhere in the mountains.

Army reservist and search expert Juan García believes the police stopped their search for the missing Jay too early and warned him beforehand that he could feed on plants and rainwater to survive.

Former detective Hedges told The Sun: “It’s certainly possible. I think it’s important to let the inquiry keep all lines of inquiry open until they’re proven to be unsustainable.

“It’s quite a long time to survive without food. It depends on how much rain falls, on whether there is enough water.
